[#1256133]

30k walk today. At one point, along a narrow and well-trod footpath.

Along comes the Mountain Biker (piss-pot lid, white goatee).

Him: "Hi."

Me: "It's a "footpath".

Him: "What"?

Me: "It's a footpath".

Him: (Still pedalling) LOUDLY. "%***!!%*$&" (Indeciferable).

Me: "Sorry, I didn't catch that. What did you say?"

Him: (Top of his voice) "You're just a f*cking arseh*le! I know more than you! F*ck off!"

Nice. ๐Ÿ™„

Well, I, for one, hopes the stupid ****wit crashes hard and breaks something that causes him very great pain and keeps him off the hills for a long time.

What no general swearing or just no indecipherable babble? Are you sure you live in Scotland?

I got that in a checkout que in Morrisons, welcome to Great Britain.

I also learned that not to get a lash back as you did-keep myself to myself as I'm not a law/rule enforcer.

Well at least he said hello...

I guess it's not worth pointing out things if we can't deal with replies that are rude. Hence I can no longer be bothered to tell bikers or chavs that they being rude or breaking rules as they will just tell you to F-off.

Bloody walkers ๐Ÿ™‚

Well, minus the swearing and the attitude, I've had numerous confrontations of that sort in Scotland.

It happens... I'd like to be able to say I've never ridden down a footpath but I'd be lying. However when challenged and in the wrong, the correct course of action is to apologise and dismount.

I've managed to fall off piste before in error, the person who challenged me was quite apologetic when I explained this.

BTW why were you pointing out that it was a footpath?
And why didn't you say Hi back? Seems pretty rude to me.

OK, on a technicality, youve got me, I've met self righteous walkers (often with English accents) and d**khead MTBers too, but legally it SHOULDNT happen.

Don't get this whole footpath / bridleway stuff - born and bred in Scotland.... I cycle respectfully and will slow down / stop / dismount if necessary. I now live in England and cycle wherever I like, but with care and respect for other users....

Him: "Hi."

Me: "It's a "footpath".

Any reason you chose not to be polite, and say hi back? Nothing excuses his rudeness mind. Perhaps he thought he was on a bridleway? If you're interested in enforcing the ROW laws or merely educating people, you'll have a better chance if you engage with them rather than just barking rules.

I ride extensively on local tracks, legal and illegal. Amusingly, the only real gerrofffthislaaaand I've had was on a ride in the Quantocks. On a bridleway ๐Ÿ˜€ The overwhelming majority of people I've met seem to like seeing others out in the countryside enjoying themselves.

When Im home I ride almost exclusively on footpaths. No ones ever mentioned anything to me, most are positively cheery in fact. No harm was caused by him, why even try to bring up the subject? just trying to be awkward/annoying?

Booooorrrrinnnng. Try posting this at www.WhoppitWalksWhippets.com, they might give a **** over there.

Maybe you thought this was a walking forum, do you actually own a bike or do you just come here to wind people who do up a little?

I normally find that the following statement tends to end the debate:

The recording on the definitive map of a route as a footpath is without prejudice to any higher rights which may exist - Section 56 wildlife and countryside act 1981, now, if you'll excuse me!

and yes, I've used it 8)

<checks> yep this is STW, not red sock world. <checks again> yes it still is - how strange, I thought I'd got the wrong forum there for a minute. Of course his swearing was unnecessary - he just doesn't know the correct response to self righteous people telling you irrelevant information.

It happens... I'd like to be able to say I've never ridden down a footpath but I'd be lying. However when challenged and in the wrong, the correct course of action is to apologise and dismount.

When challenged by somebody ordinary out walking, the correct response is actually one of the following:
a) Yes I know, silly isn't it.
b) What's it got to do with you?
c) What ZE said - though I've never tried that myself.
Depending on how friendly they seem.

You do know that unless they're the landowner (or the landowner's agent), they have absolutely no right to tell you whether or not you should be there? (sorry GG - off on my cycling legal stuff again).

That sounds fantastic - what does it mean? or is it purely to cause confusion? Confused me.
