Gladiators! Who will be watching?

Looking forward to sitting down with the family on Saturday and watching it. Hope it doesn’t disappoint. Some of the new Gladiators look like absolute monsters!

Favourite recollection from watching it in the 1990s was when Eunice Huthart, who was then a competitor, absolutely battered a load of them on The Gauntlet. Huthart then went on to be a Gladiator herself, before becoming a stunt performer on 007, Star Wars and Tomb Raider movies.

Will definitely watch the first one at least, loved the original BITD. Don't think I ever saw the 2nd version that was done 2010 ish?

yeah remember Eunice, absolute legend, didn't realise she'd gone on to be a stunt woman!

The Mash playing a blinder on the subject....

Gladiators revival to include silent dad hiding erection in background

😂

Its difficult to beat as a bit of Saturday night silliness. Who's going to do the AWOOGA's with no Fash though?

Saturday nights were great back then - Gladiators and Blind Date 🙂

I'll be watching (I got tickets for the live show but it clashed with a school event - and apparently the whole thing ended in chaos anyway with people being turned away).

No because I am not 10 years old.
Even when I was 10 I would have thought it was shit.

I much preferred Ice Warriors.  It was kind of like Wings to Gladiators' Beatles and like Alan Partridge said, Wings was the band the Beatles could have been.

I'm in, if only for curiosity value. And this exchange with a mate who was inviting us round for a barbecue one time:

I'll try it out of curiosity but I wonder if it's sufficiently different to stuff like wipeout and ninja warrior, or does gladiator vs competitor appeal more than competitors vs obstacles.

It will probably be awful, expectations are super low, but I used to watch it with my kids when they were young*. Both my boys loved it. So for old times sake I will give it a go.

*both Kids over 30 now!

I'll watch it out of curiosity - an acquaintance in the village is the uncle of one of the new male Gladiators.

Going back in time, friends in Teeside lived round the corner from Jet. Added a little excitement to trips to the corner shop

It won't be the same without 'wolf', and more importantly 'Jet'.

On a more serious note, I read an article recently about how difficult it was to recruit good gladiators for the origeonal, as they need to be very athletic in a general sense, as in they couldn't just go to the local 'power lifting gym' and sign people up, because most of them would have heart attacks if they are made to do any sort of prolonged cardio, due to the fact they don't do endurance training, and they are all pumped up to the eyeballs on 'roids.

It's a recruitment nightmare!

Interesting article on some of the new ones - Giant is the local guy to us.

It’s like a much more basic 90’s version with the added appeal of (Jet) people taking lumps out of each other and faux Gladiator intimidation.   Let’s hope 2000’s era H&S hasnt dumbed it down too much.  See it as Saturday night TV rather than an athletic event.

Yes, I'm sure none of the original gladiators were on any sort of PEDs.

Except for the slightly racistly named Shadow, of course.  He was definitively the only one.

Shadow was my favourite. Absolute monster on the pugil sticks! Always thought the steroids thing was unfair, no doubt all of the bigger guys on there were juicing. If you recruit body builders what do you expect?

Turns out he was was a genuine wrongun though. 😕 Currently in jail for kidnapping and torturing a guy over a drug debt.

Yeah, with Shadow it's not clear if it was the steroids they had a problem with or the massive amounts of cocaine he was also doing.

They seemed fine with Cobra being drunk though.

All in all it seems like everyone involved was having a jolly good time.

Re Shadow (from wiki) :

King moved to New York City as a 14-year-old[1] He fell victim to the crack boom of the late 70s and became a drug addict. His mother requested help from his father back in England who sent money to pay for his fare to England to escape drugs. King spent the money his father sent twice on drugs before the third time he bought a ticket and relocated to England...

In early 1995, King was at the centre of a steroid abuse scandal that saw him lose his job on the show...His fall from grace saw him turn to drugs, smoking heroin, crack cocaine,[1] and he struggled to deal with his addiction for nearly 20 years, turning to crime to pay for his habit which saw him in and out of jail....

In March 2005, whilst travelling on the top deck of a 205 bus in Southall, London, King was discovered in possession of an elderly person's bus pass, which he had shown to the driver to board the bus, despite being only 43 at the time. He was arrested for being in possession of stolen property, and taken to Southall Police Station...

In an April 2011 interview he reported that he had finally beaten his addictio....

In 2021 King was part of a criminal gang whose members were charged with a range of offences in connection with the kidnapping, beating, and false imprisonment...

Wow!!

I used to work with “Fury’s” dad. He himself was nails, MMA and of all things a Coal carrying Champion.

His daughter Jodie (Fury) was born profoundly deaf. Give her various bios a scan, and we’ll see a bit more than a roid fuelled gym bunny.

Google Jodie Ounsley
