[#10062828]

I woke up to hear something droning around our tent (we're in France at the moment). It looks like a fly, and the closest that comes up on Google is a giant horsefly, but it's not like any horsefly I've seen before

Is the Horsefly the 2018 replacement for the Trance?

I had something like that on the back of our campervan in Pembrokeshire last week. It was a big brute!

Did you train it to stay still while you took a photo of it?

Yes, one of them landed on my table in the New Forest on Monday. Didn't fancy the look of it so flicked it into next week.

Put it on bare skin and see what happens.  You'll soon know if it's a horsefly.

I don't think it's a Horsefly, reckon it's a Hoverfly.

Looks like a Hornet Mimic Hoverfly. Lovely thing only ever seen one once quite harmless.

Weird, I saw something just like this at the weekend north of Perth. About the size of half my thumb, chased it with camera but it kept running away. Beaut

Definitely a horsefly of the Tabus family and probably either Tabus sudeticus or Tabus autumnalis

Great looking critter. Looks like it’s borrowed a pair of Bono’s sunglasses
