Was it not Enoch Powell who came up with the singular truism that all political careers are doomed to end in failure. Having lived through the Thatcher era, I can't say that what she did was any better or worse than any other politician. Labour took us into Iraq and deregulated bank controls which helped contribute to our current mess, is that any worse than what Thatcher did? In Glasgow, the ship building industry that once led the world is now a shadow of what it was. Other economies caught up and the unions never saw it coming save for the likes of Jimmy Reid who had the savvy to see where the industry was headed. Thatcher is an easy target to lay all our woes at of the time. However, to wish I'll upon her? Nah, life is too short to waste time on that. Better to learn from her mistakes and look forward. As a kid , I hated everything she stood for yet when I saw her in the flesh, she stopped being the monster I had created in my mind but a little old lady with an odd hand bag and ugly shoes.

cg, i remember me and my dad being out of work at the same time in 1984.
with him being a miner and me being a coal merchant, no coal was allowed out of the yards.
like i said earlier i managed to get a job, but my wage went to my mum to run a house with 4 people to feed.
i do remeber being a very angry skint young man.

I was 16, I seem to remember it just heralded a different kind of crap from the previous crap. But I was 16, a seething gangly flesh bag of hormones and not really paying that much attention to anything I couldn't eat,drink or have sex with.

13 in 1979 and vividly remember the miners' strikes. I remember having milk at school too. 😆

I was old enough to remember my Dad losing his job and going away for months on end to work on the Scottish isles to keep food on our table. Old enough to remember drawing pictures to post him. I will never forget those dark days and I consider my family members some of the more fortunate ones in those times.

I was 8 in 79 and can remember as a kid watching the rubbish pile up and watching green goddess's put out fires befor she came in to power. British Leyland and miner strikes dominating the news followed by months of the Falklands. Wasn't much fun for me as my parents suffered greatly through continous bouts of unemployment, as I entered the workplace in 88 things had improved at home only slightly but not much for the people around me at work or neighbours.
If she goes, she goe,s won't be missed by many people but there are plenty to replace her in terms of reprehensible politicians who can see no further than the end of there bank balances

As a result of this thread I will be going to buy some beers tomorrow to celebrate the hopefully iminent demise of Mrs Thatcher.

No politician is perfect, but as Tony Benn said you knew where you stood with her. On the point of unemployment, industries like coal were no longer viable, she didn't waste money trying to subsidise them and although bitter at the time, countries that did try to keep loss making industries going like France & Germany are now paying for it with huge unemployment now.

She stood firm against the IRA and reacted with an incredibly cool head in the Brighton bombings.

She took on Argentina and won.

She revolutionised higher education.

Her government turned around an uncompetitive, union-dominated economy into a powerhouse that set a lot of precedents for the world to follow.

She inspired (some of) a generation to believe that hard work pays off.

She was a genuinely well respected leader the World over.

Whatever you think look at our GDP growth from 79' to now and compare to other countries. Thatcher laid most of the ground work for that.

It would appear that GDP growth increased at a [i]lower rate[/i] compared to similar countries under Thatcher.

GDP growth in the UK increased at a higher rate compared to other countries after Thatcher was gone.

My memory may not be what it was
