"Chicken-shit poltroon" is a favourite of mine.
would you like rice or chips with that sir?
Was it not Enoch Powell who came up with the singular truism that all political careers are doomed to end in failure. Having lived through the Thatcher era, I can't say that what she did was any better or worse than any other politician. Labour took us into Iraq and deregulated bank controls which helped contribute to our current mess, is that any worse than what Thatcher did? In Glasgow, the ship building industry that once led the world is now a shadow of what it was. Other economies caught up and the unions never saw it coming save for the likes of Jimmy Reid who had the savvy to see where the industry was headed. Thatcher is an easy target to lay all our woes at of the time. However, to wish I'll upon her? Nah, life is too short to waste time on that. Better to learn from her mistakes and look forward. As a kid , I hated everything she stood for yet when I saw her in the flesh, she stopped being the monster I had created in my mind but a little old lady with an odd hand bag and ugly shoes.
Cheers
Sanny

Just curious like ... who on here was an adult when Margaret Thatcher came to power?
You're asking about age rather than behaviour, right?
Just wondering who remembers the strikes, 3 day week, rubbish collections building up etc etc.
Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, LG, OM, PC, FRS (nรฉe Roberts; born 13 October 1925) served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990
Straight from wiki.
I wasn't even born when she was PM.
i was 13 cg.
I was 6
I was 5, left school just in time for her fxxking recession to screw up my entry into the world of employment. ๐
cg, i remember me and my dad being out of work at the same time in 1984.
with him being a miner and me being a coal merchant, no coal was allowed out of the yards.
like i said earlier i managed to get a job, but my wage went to my mum to run a house with 4 people to feed.
i do remeber being a very angry skint young man.

but looking on the bright side.. it was also the perfect time to appreciate the explosion of the rave scene and general air of rebellion.. and if you were wise and decided to live according to her philosophy you could make a killing selling drugs.. and psychedelic print clothing..
unfortunately I was just one of the nobs who spent my dole cheque on such luxuries...

Well I certainly remember that there was no 3 day week or rubbish collections building up when Margaret Thatcher came to power.
What can you remember C_G ?
I was 16, I seem to remember it just heralded a different kind of crap from the previous crap. But I was 16, a seething gangly flesh bag of hormones and not really paying that much attention to anything I couldn't eat, drink or have sex with.
13 in 1979 and vividly remember the miners' strikes. I remember having milk at school too. ๐
I was old enough to remember my Dad losing his job and going away for months on end to work on the Scottish isles to keep food on our table. Old enough to remember drawing pictures to post him. I will never forget those dark days and I consider my family members some of the more fortunate ones in those times.
I was 8 in 79 and can remember as a kid watching the rubbish pile up and watching green goddess's put out fires befor she came in to power. British Leyland and miner strikes dominating the news followed by months of the Falklands. Wasn't much fun for me as my parents suffered greatly through continous bouts of unemployment, as I entered the workplace in 88 things had improved at home only slightly but not much for the people around me at work or neighbours.
If she goes, she goe,s won't be missed by many people but there are plenty to replace her in terms of reprehensible politicians who can see no further than the end of there bank balances
As a result of this thread I will be going to buy some beers tomorrow to celebrate the hopefully iminent demise of Mrs Thatcher.
Oh and surf matt - why you felt to need the death of your baby is beyond me

"those with the broadest shoulders" does not appear to be the people with the most money, many of whom created this mess. Who would have guessed that from a Tory government?
I think we'll look on Thatcher favourably by the time this lot have finished

Rickets has been on the increase for many years in Britain now. But I do remember someone talking about "returning to Victorian values"........it was Thatcher actually.
ha! she had bigger balls than you lot of nancies, thats for sure!
I was 17 and remember being worried first of all about the rising price of beer,2nd I didnt have a girl maybe I should post that on another thread :-)struggled through college then 2 years on the bru miners strike etc things looked bad then and they look bad now. When she does go I wont be mourning
I was 20 in 79
No politician is perfect, but as Tony Benn said you knew where you stood with her. On the point of unemployment, industries like coal were no longer viable, she didn't waste money trying to subsidise them and although bitter at the time, countries that did try to keep loss making industries going like France & Germany are now paying for it with huge unemployment now.She stood firm against the IRA and reacted with an incredibly cool head in the Brighton bombings.
She took on Argentina and won.
She revolutionised higher education.
Her government turned around an uncompetitive, union-dominated economy into a powerhouse that set a lot of precedents for the world to follow.
She inspired (some of) a generation to believe that hard work pays off.
She was a genuinely well respected leader the World over.
Do people not understand that the coal industry was NO LONGER VIABLE? Why prop it up?
+1.
Standing up to the unions was probably most important thing she did. The strikes and effect on output convinced Thatcher the problem was supply side - she moved away from demand management economics, focusing on monetarism and supply side reform .
Whatever you think look at our GDP growth from 79' to now and compare to other countries. Thatcher laid most of the ground work for that.
Rickets has been on the increase for many years in Britain now.
That's lack of vitamin D, which can be fixed with sunshine.
Too many people sat indoors furiously posting to STW...

Monetarism pretty much a dead duck now.
Monetarism pretty much a dead duck now.
We're still controlling the money supply to maintain an inflation target.
I was born in 1979.

So it can be "fixed with sunshine" ......and ?? ..... what's your point ?
Did I say that couldn't be ?
Maybe you should stop and think before sitting there furiously posting to STW ..... eh ?

Socialism = a truly chronic British disease!
Lefties = miserable, self serving, shortsighted, financially irresonsible niaive fools!
"Thatch" is a legend!
Greatest PM of our generation, by a country mile!
Whatever you think look at our GDP growth from 79' to now and compare to other countries
fifth in the world in 79 and fifth in 2006 ?
I cannot be bothered working out the percentage increase but we were overtaken by two countries in that period and I assume others grew faster as well - brazil india etc.
I sure ain't no feminist but you will never ever see a Prime Minister with bigger balls than Margaret Thatcher.
Standing up to the unions was probably most important thing she did

You realise that when she does we will have to pay for a 24 hour, 365 days a year guard for her tomb? For two reasons, one, to protect it from dancers and streams of wee, and two, to make sure she stays in it...

Yeah cinnamony, they are either too young, or too wrapped up in their socialist ideology!
Spongebob - yeah, was just trying to flush 'em out. ๐
My memory may not be what it was but, c'mon on, there's a load of tosh being spouted on this thread.
The title of this thread is quite nasty.

I did what you suggested and found this :

It would appear that GDP growth increased at a lower rate compared to similar countries under Thatcher.
GDP growth in the UK increased at a higher rate compared to other countries after Thatcher was gone.
My memory may not be what it was
Is that why you think the 3 day week was in 1979 ?
