This thing appeared in our garden recently, around the same time our cats dissapeared. Any idea what it is?

Youre lawn is a mess and you need to cut your hedge.
Every time I go near that end of the garden the Agapanthus makes funny noises, not really sure it wants tidying.....

You didn't say it made noises.
In that case it's an Aspidistra.
Bow in front of it and say "Gronda, Gronda Rangdo" and you'll be fine to crack on with the hedges.

Just get in touch with Bunnyhop, it's and invasive species and can be fed on squirrels.
