So, you buy a 3 year old car, it breaks down within 5 days of ownership, the garage finally get round to looking at it today (5 days after it broke) but they can't find my car key!

The only slight complication is that I got the key off them to get something out of the car but definitely gave it back.

Who's going to have to pay?

I bet you end up paying. Can you order a spare key through the dealer that supplied the car new ?

They are! They Have to prove you did not give it back.

It is in their garage to be fixed (i gather you bought it from them).

Re trace your steps and give the a detailed analysis of what happened. Did you give it to the YTS bloke?

Unless of course you are forgetful type and do this kind of thing regular? 😉

It's not the garage I bought it from, just a small 2 man band at the bottom of my road where it broke.

Just to make matters worse, it's a French thing with a credit card type thing instead of a 'real' key.

I distinctly remember giving it back and even quoted them the words I spoke!!

As its a card I bet they've stuffed it in a drawer or something rather than on the key hooks! Your insurance might cover it, but I'd personally call their bluff and say you are only 3rd party or something, and let them sort it.

If it's a Laguna dont expect a cheap fix.
You have to buy the card which gets sent from France, cant remember exact cost but think + 70.00. Then to add insult you then have to pay to have it programmed.

I hope they find it for you pronto.

Panic over they have just called again to say they have found it!

I really didn't want to get in to the who's gonna pay for it thing!

And yes, it is a Laguna! 😳

Might I be so bold as to suggest getting a spare?

it's a better result than the guy I met in the carpark at Cwmcarn who was asking "did you see any keys on the ways down" 😐

Cwn Carn has a definite key thing going on - the only time my car ever locked itself spontaneously with the keys inside was ...guess where...

That spare form ebay won't work as they can only program one that matches your car. this was done to stop people from nicking the car by get a key programed to it i think.

Keep an eye on your gearbox. My mate has an 04 plate Laguna and the gearbox went 2.5k to replace!!

Apparently its a known problem but Renault wont pay..
