But there are 1080p copies about on t'web. Interesting. Is it noticeably better? The picture quality on GoT doesn't seem to be as good as it could be - it's always very dark and you get a bit of banding. I'd assumed the darkness helped them hide the visual effects....

A lot of the dark scenes are interiors, a huge amount of the exterior shots are enhanced in some way and feature digital elements or composites that 99% of viewers are completely oblivious to.
The leaked episode 6 is fake isn't it? I hope this is just the producers getting revenge on for the last leak, and the real episode 6 airs on Monday as usual. If not then I fear for the remainder of the show.
They've spent an awful lot of money & gone to a lot of effort just for lolz in that case, as it looks pretty authentic! Not that anyone would complain if on Monday they're like, "Naw, this is the [i]real[/i] episode!" as that just means even more GoT!

Not for this thread, but that is not true. If it's a film-based source (which GoT is), then any reasonable modern deinterlacer should detect it as such and do reverse 3:2 pulldown with absolutely no difference between 1080i60 and 1080p24Er, no. Imperfectly, yes.
More important for Sky is
a) Adverts. I could never watch anything with adverts interrupting.
b) Bitrate and compression algorithm. They seem to compress more than HBO in the US.
c) Do they tinker with anything. There was a lot of talk about them boosting blacks on the movie channels to look better on many average TVs.

Well it course depends on the source but when I've watched the 1080p versions in the past when I was trying to catch up it Sky took the box set down it was better.
I've not noticed banding in sky in the dark scenes that usually comes down to if your TV.

Was the sound not bobbins? I tried but didnt get past the credits , twas like a biscuit tin audio.
There's several copies out. The best audio is in the one just over 2GB. Has passable 2.0 AAC.

That compares to BBC1 1.1 4.4 14.2
They're variable so will depend on the demands of other stuff on the same mux that's playing at the same time but that's a good allocation. Still depends on the quality and settings of the encoders (athough those should be optimised by now and Sky should be able to get it right).
Saying that, lipsync on Ch4+1 has been terrible for me for years and it's just that channel so can't be solved with the delay settings or down to my equipment.

Picture quality seems as it should be, but there have been some reports of sound issues on Sky Altantic that have backed up what I have noticed - the 'level' does seem low, and there were occasional sound glitches in the last episode. The glitches don't repeat when rewound and played back though which suggests that it could be a 'on demand/streaming' issue. No idea why that would be specific to Sky Atlantic though. It might simply be that I don't use 'on demand' enough to notice, more likely to download.

It's not the box but the broadcast or internet stream that we care about. You set the output of the box to the best quality your TV can deal with. The box will then either pass through the stream unchanged or downconvert at the box if it needs to.

Sure, not debating that, but someone above asked if 'Sky' was 1080i or 1080p. It was not clear if they were being specific about GOT on Sky, or the general capability of Sky/Sky Q. I guess we have covered both options now.

I stopped being familiar with this stuff around the time the 2E went up...
