Sounds a bit odd. My local pool just states that all swimwear to be 'appropriate' for a public pool. There are some quite interesting interpretations of the term 'appropriate'...

Yeah, but what about proper swimming shorts, with the liner thing?

It seems to be because baggy shorts might be worn outside in the street so they think they're not clean enough to wear in the pool.

But then surely lots of speedos will get worn on the beach.

I know this one, after arguing the toss with the French pool attendant on holiday he explained in his best English, ''You have to wear trunks because what the French resorts have found is people wear their swimming shorts all day at the beach, then the bar, then shopping, then get back to the pool and dive in it wearing a filthy pair of shorts, leaving sand and all sorts of other muck at the bottom of the pool'' Makes sense if you think about it, I stopped arguing after that.

Yeah please someone has to know - i've been wondering this since 1996...We were turned away from a pool in avignon. It got too hot, so we got the 11.37pm train to Bern in switzerland.

It's so French blokes can strut about showing their package and tight buns off. It's a european thing. Go to Italy, the swimming pools there are filled with young muscular blokes rubbing oil over each other.

If you plan to put a potato down your speedos to enhance your lunchbox, make aure you put it down the front. Just saying.

The oil on italian men is to stop them sticking together in the warm water.
