But the very same image, with the logo, was used in an advert at the top of the page. So is that not an advert either?

I didn't see it beyond a screenshot, but it looked like it to me, yes (which I assume is why they weren't delivered to subscribers, if they were then I'd totally have agreed with the complaints).  They were different things though, it was a clickable link (I assume) as an element making up the body of the forum which was directly advertising a specific product.

do we really need multiple images per thread telling us that issue XXX of the magazine is now available?

I don't know if it's just me, but I've not seen the slider in a few days now?  As for inline images, I don't know, as a premier account holder I don't see those.

Again, nobody knows if a management decision not to piss people off has been taken or somebody broke it trying to make it happen more often 😉

Same as the background really

I haven't checked all 86 pages, but (and with the greatest respect), having read the most recent three or so pages just now, I don't see what benefit having either of the mods replying to this thread is having - either for them, or for the users and subscribers raising legitimate points (multiple times). The mods don't speak for the company (STW), and aren't privy to information or have decision-making powers, but in replying to posts on this thread it gives the impression that they do. Probably clearer all-round if the mods moderate the site (removing/editing posts that don't adhere to the site rules), and users/subscribers keep raising the valid points on this thread (or via email to STW staff), and see whether they get a response from an employee - if they do or dont, either way would speak volumes.

I don't "have" to do this, I choose to.

More fool me, I suppose, but I'm trying to help.  Both the site owners and the site users.

Yup we do it to help out that’s all just helps the place keep running. You have to accept that there are those that will target you as a mod but unless it gets personal then it’s all just water off a duck’s back. Just have to wonder how often those that do take a pop at us actually touch themselves when they do.

Have a think about why Microsoft perhaps might not be reliant on third-party website advertising to stay in business and keep their site online. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

No argument there. It was just a response to the argument of no commercial sites with just body text. Okay example is a bit more than that, and yes MS is huge and can afford it. Just nitpicking on the claim 😏

Fully appreciate the need to fund somehow and that may be through advertising.

Perhaps if the mods want to [s] preserve their reputations[/s] maintain the respect they rightfully deserve , they should bow out of these threads. Moderate posts that breach the rues, but pass no more comment on the site's dev failings.

There's little point playing Comical Ali for STW when you cant fix anything yourselves, nor offer much by way of factual answers to specific questions. Dont go down on someone else's ship.

Eh, if I was worried about a reputation, or what others think in general, I'd never have agreed to do it.  If someone's gonna judge me then that's their outlook.

Two points:

1)

In non-mod posts

We don’t know which are your mod posts and which are not, so we’ll always likely treat your posts as mod posts. I.e. speaking as STW’s representative, and that you have your hand fairly close to a big button. If you don’t want to be treated like a mod or STW’s representative, then you know what to do.

2) it was a ducking ad. Stop insulting our intelligence, and your own. In many ways the cross-promotion is too, and yes, the BBC have been criticised for this in the past too.

The Spesh ad was annoying though, it confused me and I thought I was using one of my non P logins.

Nearly posted using completely the wrong persona 👩

The first part of that is a fair comment.  If in doubt, assume "user."  I used to use <mod> tags but kind of got out of the habit.  I'll try and fix that, fair shout.

The second comment less so.  That would be an abuse of power and despite allegations from some quarters I'd never do that.  I've never moderated posts (and certainly never issued bans) for anything anyone's said against me.  I choose to put myself in the firing line, hiding behind a moderator tag in an argument is a ****'s trick.

When moderation has happened in that sort of situation it's usually because Mark's intervened to protect us from abuse, he has a zero tolerance policy there.  (And from memory, the only time that's actually happened is when it's escalated from the forum into a torrent of abuse via email.)  The notion that you can't speak your minds because Moderator is a fiction.

As a non-P user and self-confessed ad-block user I'm confused as to how you even saw it.

Mods can make jokes

They might try, on occasion 😉

And thanks for writing back cougar. That’s a good explanation of where you stand on the mod/user interface. I suppose there will always be a bit of a perceived power imbalance in a discussion, even if in actuality that’s not the case.

No, I’m not a P user. I’ve explained at length why. STW doesn’t want my custom, so I’m unlikely to throw money at them in those circumstances. Not being a P user means that I’m supposed to see ads, right? That would explain why the page looked like a Specialized infomercial for me yesterday for a bit. However, as STW doesn’t pay for my bandwidth, I’ll be the arbiter of what I do and don’t download, thank you.

As a P subscriber and an Ad block user I still got the full-page Specialized ad. It had been coded in such a way as to bypass adblock.

Contempt.

Oh oh yes whether they’re are funny or not is a different matter.

It was background image no tricky coding required. I’m not sure if it was intended Ad or not but other than it was awful I failed to see the issue.

There are 87 pages to sift through and I need to go to bed, so I'll just ask instead:

Is there an issue with the forum front page not updating? I'm seeing the same stuff for hours on end, and then when I go to page 2 the majority is filled with stuff I can see on page 1. There are no changes in post order, no post count increases, no change in "freshness". It's doing it on Windows PC with Chrome, Firefox and Edge, Android phone with Firefox and Chrome and iPhone Safari. The fact that it's multiple devices, OS and browsers makes me think it's not an issue at my end but I know little about this sort of thing.

It is the greatest of shames that the mods let themselves be continually mugged off by the people that make a living from their work.

They are being taken advantage of.

We really aren’t Sbob we are not being mugged of in the slightest and it’s pretty insulting to me that you think that. If I was being taken advantage of I’d told Mark to shove the modding and he knows that I’ve known him for about 16 years now.

If we didn’t give the info that we can give then the torrent of moaning and probably abuse on this thread would be worse asking why the mods aren’t even answering. Your constant little digs at us is however becoming quite tedious.

I’m not sure if it was intended Ad or not

Of course - it was just chance that a giant background image with a Specialised logo appeared at the same time as a flood of ads for a new Spec bike, pure coincidence, oh yes.

Of course – it was just chance that a giant background image with a Specialised logo appeared at the same time as a flood of ads for a new Spec bike, pure coincidence, oh yes.

My theory here:

Singletrack ad sales team (is there anyone?) sold a site takeover to specialized as part of a campaign for the stumpjumper launch.

With the site changes, the publisher found they didn't have the ad unit available to host the skin element of the takeover and so meet the contractual agreement with the advertiser. A workaround of using a "background image" was used, hence the image still appearing to P and adblocker users.

If my theory is correct, all that needs to happen is for the publisher to come on and say "sorry if you didn't like the image background the other day, here's the technical reasons, we need the ad revenue, it's finished now and we're looking at solutions to allow us to do a better job next time we sell a takeover. Thanks for your patience and I'm sure you can appreciate how important it is to us to strike a balance between keeping users happy and generate the money we need to pay staff wages and keep the lights on."

Only a ****ing wierdo would take exception to a post like that.

Communication as always is the key.

Do you know what would solve that? Mark et al. actually communicating with us in a calm and pleasant manner. Y'know, just the most effing obvious solution.

Does anybody actually really care about the Spesh advert?

Sure I subscribe but I can’t say it bothered me and I wasn’t frothing at the mouth that my contractual right to no ads had been violated.

The problem I think is much deeper, unfortunately the populous of this forum is cyclists and having observed cyclists as close quarters they can be a right bunch of oddball sanctimonious augmentative wazzocks.

I just want a forum where the content refreshes quickly, you can see your replies easily, doesnt post erroneous tags and loads in a reasonable time.

Not fussed about emojis, sliders or edit logs 👀👍

Obviously they do. It was a backdrop instead of the really really feint stw logos. My understanding was a P meant reduced or very few ads, not a contractual maximum of 0 ads, and that 1 piece of promotional material was a violation.

Anyway, on android, it was approximately 3 pixels on either side of the screen.

a right bunch of oddball sanctimonious augmentative wazzocks

I'm stealing that one for use in several forums (but with the word "argumentative" 😉 )

This obviously should be taken into account when messing with "our" forum 😀

And you should realise, at your age, that just because you don't object to something, it doesn't mean other people won't, or shouldn't.
