Ooh, now that is cheeky. If I resize the window to hide the Spec background the forum part shrinks to still display it. Very naughty indeed.

AdBlockers don’t work on the embedded adverts, so you’ll still see the red S and the Advert in the top righthand corner..

Not necessarily.

So I'll still see the same embedded advert but will have saved £15.

Sorry STW guys but I've just cancelled by auto-renew (still got 10 months to go though with a P!). I've been a supporter since issue 1 and you were handing out fake tattoos at Polaris events - but now STW has just become a vehicle for pushing adverts .

It's loaded via CSS as the background image to the body tag. If you view the page source it's the first rule in the block after the Facebook Pixel code. It looks like the origin is from the same location as the images used in content on the site.

And indeed this when I get round to it over lunch.

Sorry Mark/STW, this is not really working for me.

So I presume that means you think the forum is all fixed?

Or they were lying? 🦄

Doesn't do that in Chrome, until you get to a certain width...

Goes this narrow before adjusting itself:

Speed is great here but I do prefer the plain background, I see no Specialized logo though.

It's there if you widen your window.

Can we have the plain background and no sodding border, please?  Adds nothing but distraction, people pay for a clean, clear uncluttered look.

And they pay you (STW) to be spared the sodding adverts.  And with the S there, it's a sodding advert, isn't it?

It's no surprise that people are pissed off.

I particularly love the use of the !important tag to make sure it isn't overridden.

Am I missing something or is the forum search basically now useless? Any time I try to look for something I get tens of thousands of hits, often dating back years and years. Is there no way any more of doing an advanced search and filtering the results?

Try

(STW could embed that, but they won't)

It has always been useless!

So I can't/won't view STW on my phone because of speed and pop ups.

I can't/won't view STW at work because it is so obviously not work activity on my monitor.

This is the only site on the whole of the internet that I pay to use, I pay to not see adverts, yet I cannot avoid seeing this advert.

I have also cancelled my auto renew P (although I did this a couple of weeks ago in response to pop ups and logging out issue).

I’m using an iPad I’m not denying it’s there as others have posted screenshots.

The search function is borked there’s a new one in the pipeline.

Can i I suggest it, along with the plethora of other functionality issues raised get pushed ahead of stupid jerky sliding things and backgrounds nobody ever asked for.

If they are selling it, I sincerely hope the buyers read this thread before a price is settled

We must be running different adblockers then because I see both S and the advert in the top right corner (currently aarons bikes)

I’m not going to ask my mates in IT to get the name of the adblocker, but some do ringfence unicorns and some goats..

TBH it's better to have one "safe" ad if it means we get fewer spammy pop-ups.

Agreed, don’t mind advert (s) as long as they are static, none moving, don’t bounce or play music, are informative and contain a phone number and not another embedded link underneath that’s just clickbait.

No, the old search wasn't brilliant but it did basically work. I generally found the results I was after. However with the new one I get zillions of pages of hits, with the oldest ones being first which is usually the opposite of what I want.

Wow.....what the hell are you ****ing about with now?, what about the zero adds promise for subscribers?, been a loyal subscriber since issue 1 and still have all the mags but you can stick your publication up your arse if this is what we should expect from now on.

I'll give you a few days to sort it out.

It's OK (ish) on mobile (Nexus 5X, Chrome) so I was wondering what all the fuss was about.  Now I'm on lunch (work PC, wide monitor, Chrome)...oh.

It's a bit shit.  Even with a 'P' .  Reduce the size of the window and it's bearable.

STW: "Watch us alienate our paying customers"

BPW: " Hold my beer..."

It’s a logo. Good grief.

...it's not just a logo - it's a bloody great image that makes it obvious your are browsing the 'tinternet. For a lot of us the idea of going ad-free is to get a clean look that doesn't stick out.

And it's an advert which we have paid to be removed! So what if it's just a logo. Is that hard to understand why people are a little cross!?

You have been told. We don't understand what adverts are because we are not important....

As has been said, it must mean all the other issues are not getting fixed if we are playing with this stuff now or Spec did a Spec day thing deal with STW and it was real important to launch it today.

One great thing pre-update was the accessibility of the forum, P or no P. It's horrible to read without a P now. I think this will put people off completely, rather than signing up to get rid of all but one advert. I.e they won't get to see the great and insightful content* the forum contains before being put off

*I say that slightly tongue in cheek

Has anyone emailed Chipps and Mark and let them know?

I did a few weeks back, got a reply from Chipps but nothing from Mark. Chipps'  reply sounded hopeful, but not now...

Oh come on now, seriously?

I agree with a lot of your gripes, but how is a logo in a corner in any way, shape or form an advert?  Can you click through it to Specialized's website?  Is it inline on the page or otherwise taking up space on the forum?  Is it in the way?

Do you expect to have brand logos airbrushed out when reading product reviews now?  This must be the only bike forum in existence where readers lose their shit when seeing a bike logo on a web page background.  Presumably it's simply there because Spesh hold the rights to the photo?

I doubt there's any commercial website in existence which offers body text and nothing else, even to paid subscribers.  I doubt also that there's any other commercial website in existence which would allow this conversation to happen.  I do take your points but it feels like it's any excuse to complain from some quarters at this point.  User experience aside it's sucking the ****ing life out of me reading all this.

@Cougar. It's not so much the logo (which is advertising BTW) but the fact that when you open a thread or move to a new page the background image appears in all its glory, it is a good shot TBF, before being partially hidden by the container holding the content, i.e. the posts along with the RH sidebar. So for those <ahem> at work</ahem> there's this bloody great flashing screen rather than something understated that at least looks vaguely work related.

I can resize my browser windows so that there's about 2mm of background visible, if that's a concern.

But you DID used to offer a clean ad-free experience - you now don't, so I won't be renewing my sub. I signed up to a different service than the one now on offer.

And sorry you are stuck in the middle of this.

Did Specialized pay for STW to remove the plain simple background and put this pic up there promoting their brand?

That is the definition for me, I assume STW didn't just find an image and put it up.

It changes the entire look of the site from a slightly bland, work acceptable view to one that screams bike site.

But in reality at this point

Crap Search

No proper post history

Still getting typos

Page Numbering still doesn't work as will be proved when I hit submit there and it goes back a page

Tags in the text

Slowest Edit in the world

But then deliver a stupid pop up to tell us the mag is out and put an advertising background over the non advert site.

User experience aside it’s sucking the **** life out of me reading all this.

The feeling really is who cares what we post here, none of the devs seem to be picking this up, why should you waste your time in here.

And from PR 101 if your customer base is pissed off, people are cancelling subs and people are angry don't poke them with a stick

The background doesn't affect me as I can't see it on my mobile, but anything that shows a bike logo that wasn't there before is an advert...

Given the plethora of excellent photographers STW has access to, it is highly unlikely that the image was randomly selected as it was the right one.

Potentially a fix for less ads is to know show a sponsored background (so an advert), so you should be able to see some people's annoyance at getting ads when they have specified none.

The complete silence isn't helping...Mark should take the 10 minutes to put updates up and a lot of the critics will be silenced, this should be a standard piece. He'll get flamed the first couple of times then it will steady and people will return to happier behaviour...

It isn't difficult.
