And that 'Follow Us' on the right is annoying and a waste of space, IMO.

Having to scroll to the top of the page after reading recent posts is great.

Really great.

Do you not get the menu bar at the top of the page?

If you really think the forum isn't doing its job right now, ask Mark. Not resident grumpy Mark, Bullheart Mark.

And as far as resident grumpy Mark is concerned; all I can say is thanks for updating this free facility that we all find so essential in our lives.

Anybody who has worked in IT, and who has bothered to read the updates will know that it's a task akin to moving the passengers of a Boeing 707 to a 787 in mid-air without dropping anybody.  Even those who deserve it.

I think they've done pretty well. Thanks again.

I don't get the Facebook stuff at the side of the forum on my android tablet, it appears underneath it.

Thing is with the Facebook follow us thing - why do you think you need to promote the site to people who already subscribe? You’ve already got my attention (and my money).

I’m guessing we’re not paying for Ps at the moment, as y’know the point is there’s no ads, not just no 3rd party ads... Can’t believe that’s actually here to stay, given it’s been universally disliked.

Just so I'm clear when reporting back,

The primary beef with the "follow us" thing is that it's too large in landscape mode on the mobile site, have I got that right?

It's intrusive. There is no option to view it, or not and then move on.

In portrait it appears at the end of the thread which is much better

theres a neat bug if you increase the text size the till the top menu jumps to a new line it becomes a "floating" menu as you scroll, quite neat but looks shit as it clashes with the text underneath 🙂

My primary beef is as above. You’ve already got me hooked and I’ve given you my money. Why do you need to keep marketing to me? That’s why 8m happy to pay my subs.

on my iPad it’s where my right finger hovers. Instead of being able to click something useful it’s just at risk of clicking the Facebook banner.

Not for everyone on me for example it’s at the bottom with iOS and Safari on the mobile site, on the iPad Pro it’s on the right but takes up about the same amount of space as the old advert bar.

It might as well be adverts. They’d be more useful.

Three things here.

1) It's not an advert, it's part of the site.  Nothing's changed here.  The BBC doesn't have advertising but still runs trailers for other shows.  Show me any commercial forum that consists of nothing but forum text and you can have my bike.  Every other website I visit these days wants to throw links to other articles in my face before I've even read the one I came here to read.

2) you don't pay for "no ads," you pay for a subscription to the site / magazine and the advert thing is a bonus.

3) It's "here to stay" and been "universally disliked" by a handful of people since the site went live a few hours ago.  C'mon.

Not simultaneously and constantly throughout the shows they don't.

I get the following on Firefox; site works on Chrome.

That's weird.  It's fine for me on Firefox.  Anyone else seeing security warnings?

Yep SwiftKey.

Yeah, a few folk have reported similar.  Given that it's a subset of a subset of browsers I doubt it's going to be high on the priority list of fixes, but we flagged it up earlier.

Agreed, junk at the side should go.

I get that it's not an advert, but it looks like one, just a bit messy and irritating.

That the official position cougar? Shut up and stop complaining it ain't going to change.

One of thetmain selling points of membership is zero ads on the forum. Its one of the reasons stw has my money. With the greatest of respect for the work of the mods this is commercial feedback from customers. Please don't dismiss them out of hand.

My point stands, stw has my cash don't push more onto me.

you don’t pay for “no ads,”

The subscription page tells me I'm paying for:

Optimised, ad free website browsing

I would post a link to that, but without the buttons I CBA to try to post a URL. So as a paying customer, can I just point out that a large floating Facebook ad is something I really don't want, and the fact that it seems to have been prioritised over giving me back the functionality I used to have is pretty much telling me you don't value me as a customer.

No it's my own opinion / interpretation of where we are.  The moderators don't speak with any official status on behalf of the site owners and never have.

There's been a massive upgrade, and people are lining up to say how shit it is whilst the paint is still wet and the developers are probably in bed having worked all day on Sunday.  Which is kinda depressing for me so must be heart-breaking for those invested in the site.

Mark has said all along that this is transitionary.  Read the first post.  Maybe the contentious banner will be removed for subscribers, maybe it'll be presented in a different format.  Maybe it won't.  Who knows at this point.  Reporting issues is great because we can feed back, er, feedback to the Powers That Be.  Throwing your toys out of the pram a couple of hours after an upgrade because it looks slightly different to how it was before isn't constructive.

"Cougar

The primary beef with the “follow us” thing is that it’s too large in landscape mode on the mobile site, have I got that right?"

I'm on desktop and right now it's taking up as much screen as the reply/preview box. I don't hate that we have it but it's redonkulously big.

The light grey quoting is more of a usability thing, I have one bad eye and it's giving me some reading issues. Of all the ways you guys could have emulated Dirt magazine this is not the one I'd have chosen.

But it seems like a step forward and I'm sure is the result of lots of hard work so thanks folks, keep at it! If nobody was moaning it'd mean the thread must be broken.

Plenty of nice improvements.

Agree that the body text (colours and font) in the forum is even less readable than before though.

And a screenshot of the menu fun, on my iPad:

Ah, ok.  Fair comment.

the fact that it seems to have been prioritised over giving me back the functionality I used to have

Are you missing any functionality beyond what's already been discussed (eg, the 'history' thing)?

My understanding is that the priority is to bring the forum up to a point where it's actually a maintainable platform open for development again.  Issues like the font being a little dim is somewhat secondary to that.

is pretty much telling me you don’t value me as a customer.

You said "you" just there - just for the avoidance of doubt, I don't work here.  I'm just a volunteer, you're not "my" customer.  I'm just trying to help here and my comments have no reflection on how STW values you as a customer.  Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Right, I've read the first post, randomly every so often something breaks and changes. We feedback what is broken and try and helph Given no other real method for feedback we use the forum. If the owners do not wish to hear feedback about what is working and what is pissing people off then that ti's up tot them. People on tbis have reacted to the addiction of content specifically that looks like an ad (be it for stw or not)

No it’s my own opinion / interpretation of where we are. The moderators don’t speak with any official status on behalf of the site owners and never have.

If that is the case iIwouldI  suggest from how some replies read that  you appear to be speaking on behalf of them. Perhaps this is a thread best managed and moderated by the dev guys so they can provide some official responses.

Hm.  I'm on desktop, and the body text width is about the same as it always was, just offset to the left a bit.  Is that not the case for you?

The light grey quoting is more of a usability thing,

I can't imagine for a moment that this will be difficult to change.  (Though I doubt it'll be high priority.)

No toy-pram separation here.

Wasn't directed at you, Perchy old chap.  Just generally.

It's a third of the page.

It's still an advert.

Thing is with the Facebook follow us thing – why do you think you need to promote the site to people who already subscribe? You’ve already got my attention (and my money).

And that. I don't use Facebook.

I know what's on the homepage.

It's pushing content I've already read  twice - once in the mag, once on the homepage.

I've been positive about the updates so far, but along with the clickbait headlines, this is a bit much, tbh.

Hmm.  I assumed people understood that that wasn't the case, which is a failing on my part.  Thanks for letting me know.

I understand what STW is trying to achieve here, and having stared into the belly of the beast that was the old site I'm behind them 100% in wanting to have it taken out and shot.  As I said after the last update, I have no doubts that we're in a much better place than we were previously.  Beyond that though, I'm just a forum user trying to help make things better.

And I still don't have my $%^&ing "moderator" tag back... (-:

Just seen there appears to be the ability to change username in the profile edit menu - suppose I'll see if it's worked on this post!

Hated that the old forum didn't allow 'special characters' as the name tallpaul is always already taken so I'm normally 'tallpaul_s' on forums...

edit: doesn't do what I thought it would. Ah well.

What i also hope is that stw also take into account what that the users and paying subscribers are saying. Pointless developing things that piss off users. The majority of the comms are still coming from you a d Drac not the owners.

The font definitely needs some tweaking - as a heading or in quite list-like / bullet point-like copy its quite attractive. But as soon as the copy gets denser - paragraphs more than 3 lines long - it gets to be a bit of chore to read.

You said “you” just there

Sorry Cougar, didn't mean you, I understand the hard work the mods do and appreciate it. It was just a general rant to the sky - it's now over 2 weeks since the formatting buttons and the preview disappeared and I see changes to the site, but no sign of this being fixed and it's as though it's dropped off the radar in favour of new colours and the aforesaid Facebook thing.

Another oddity - I just logged out and it took me to a "page not found"; not sure if this is a new "feature" or has already been noted.

Hmm OK I can see the need to change, to update behind the scenes and have to say I like the new home page layout, will take me some time to adjust but it's ok.

But the forum, please come on ... say goodbye to 1/3 page to follow you (I already do where I am and don't use Facebook) and makes the forum bit of the forum tiny.

I'm another P and yes I see the stuff on here, in magazine etc but this constant need to stick stuff in my face is tbh quite wearing.

If you're going to change stuff you could always get opinions before in terms of what people want, like, desire, use etc and I appreciate you cannot please everyone.

But looking back through the passed pages of this one it has not gone well.

I had assumed advert free was advert free and that includes your own :/

James

Maybe I'm not critical enough, but the Follow Us banner doesn't present much of a problem. It's aesthetically unfortunate but I've seen a damned sight worse.

I love the font, and the relation of the quotes to the main text. I think proportions are good, and I also like the subtle ST symbol in the background.

Keep up the improvements, and this'll beat mumsnet yet.
