I'm with Grum. If I released something like this as a professional dev, I'd be mortified, unless it was released because my boss had made promises and explicitly told me to do the release despite me telling him it wasn't anywhere near ready. This is not ready for release.

Perhaps they coded it with predictive text

I'm curious what side of this particular debate most of the professional devs are...

Though it's been useful for me professionally - I'm busy pushing back my release despite pressure as we're not ready and I'm feeling more conscious of the customer perspective.

😆 - they've broken the paging now - the most amusing bit is that most people won't even see this comment until they fix it due to glitchy new page thingy!

Ok nonk, ‘everyone’ was me using something called hyperbole.

I honestly can’t think of another website that struggles so badly with a) having adverts that don’t piss everyone (there’s that word again) off b) implementing a forum that works (which uses simple software that’s already been made for them by someone else). It’s bizarre.

if that is possible I would serious consider doing that, and then try that suggestion of mine where the beta site is made available to us to try and find issues, and maybe reduce the scope of the changes for each release if possible.

That way 'we' are helping and the forum upgrade is managed a little bit better, instead of the car crash this seems to be. Based on this upgrade perhaps a better process for releases can be installed.

You can't even search the site with Googles site: search now.

Looking for the F1 thread but can't be arsed to manually go back through loads of pages.

It was fine before it was 'improved', like online banking when I could download a statement with a simple right-click and 'save as' but now I have to open it up, set the printer options to write a pdf and then save it because some IT wiz decided to 'improve' the 'experience' for 'mobile device users' It's now a bit of a **** on. First world problems and all that though.

Did you not save your work before you started buggering about with stuff that wasn't really broken? Can you not just load the old version up?

Yours, not at all clued-up on IT stuff.

Well this has turned a bit sour.

Maybe best to just switch the forum off for a week or so while remedial work is completed?

Just to say, I really miss the page in my profile saying what threads I posted on where I can click them and go to that thread. The recent replies page just lists the replies, there's no option to click them to go to the thread.

The thing's a bit of a mess, I've not had to post an image yet or anything but am sort of avoiding it. Is there a way to release it as beta whilst keeping a link to the old forum until it's ready? I'm sure once it's done it'll be great.

The disappearing comment thing is interesting - I've just posted on the EU In/Out thread, pressed submit . . . . nothing. just gone.

Probably for the best, on second thoughts.

Great! So I can post from Chrome (Windows 10) but I can't then see my post. I can see my post in Edge but I can't log-in to post

No quote buttons or working preview either

Shall now open this in Edge to see if it has posted 🙂

Had to enter the page number on the rul to get to this page, clicking on the last updated just gets me to page 22.

Though it’s been useful for me professionally – I’m busy pushing back my release despite pressure as we’re not ready and I’m feeling more conscious of the customer perspective.

The customer perspective won't be favourable if this are too 'not ready' and you could be exposing your company to a lot of reputational risk with such a release.

It is often better to release more often with less changes as it is easier to manage the risk and not be caught out, as has happened here it seems.

Hmm. Post disappearing weirdness, or glitchy bump?

Edit: Oh there it is. I actually like the idea of temporal posts which don't appear until one has to reassert their existence by commenting on their lack of being.

Pub analogy.

Your favourite pub needs a rewire. Would you rather they closed it for a couple of weeks or let you come in whilst the work was being done? Ok, the jukebox might not work and you might have to sit in the dark,  but you can still have a pint and a chat with your mates.

<span style="color: #444444; font-size: 18px; font-style: italic; background-color: #eeeeee;">Why are people posting multiple times?</span>

Posting multiple times is happening because you click "submit" and nothing appears to happen, not even any hint of loading. Then about 45 seconds later the page redirects and post, but in the mean time people click submit maybe two or three times. Sometimes the forum software catches it and says "duplicate post", but sometimes it doesn't.

I'm on Grum/NBT/TurnerGuy's side

(and have worked on IT releases for 19 years* and, honestly, cannot think of a live implementation that was this shonky, at least not one that wasn't subsequently backed out pretty sharpish)

*'ardest game in the world, eh, man and boy etc.

Except in this case I'm asking for beer and having to wait 5 minutes for whatever the person serving fancies letting me have. **** this pub, I'm off to 'spoons.

Excellent analogy. And both models could actually work well. But to manage the latter, you would honestly need the pub owner to manage things in such a way as to keep the disrupted atmosphere as positive and as appealing as possible. If he just became grumpy, then he would run the risk of losing his loyal clientele.

Also, if the repairs were 'in progress', but there was no evidence of improvement, and no sign that there was any actual work going on, it would quickly lead to discouragement.

Maybe Mark (or someone) could give us an end-of-the-day progress report until everything is up an running. I would think that would go a long way to assuring us that the current state of affairs is genuinely temporary, and that we had every reason to be optimistic.

But you might get electrocuted, and you probably won’t be able to hold a conversation due to all the noise.

Then there’s the obvious reason this analogy doesn’t work. IRL you only have that pub: it can either be open or done up. STW can have as many websites as they like to arse about with, and when it’s finished it can be potted onto the live platform

Your post is there legend...

Good chance a museum is used to doing this sort of thing. I would be tempted to see if they would be willing to take care of the shipping themselves. Obviously shipping is built into the price anyway, so if they take care of it all it could be left off and it’s all their problem.

This is a common way of doing things where I work, another option is you shipping to an agent of theirs within the UK.

When it comes to actually helping you do the shipping, I’m way out of my depth!
