I need to move a sizable chunk of money from the uk to Australia as a house deposit. Any advice on the best way to do it for the best exchange rate and minimum fees.

And I realise it isn't the best point in time to be moving money in this direction but needs must......

The only time I tried to do anything similar the best way was cash ๐Ÿ˜ฏ , but you may have further to travel. What I did find though was that you wanted to do the exchange conversion at source ie. Send dollars rather than pounds.

Beware the fees at the receiving end as well. You should be able to get all of the numbers and do the calculation though

You need to get set up with a foreign exchange company. I've used:

before and they provided a very good service. However, shop around - different companies re specialists in different currencies and parts of the world.
