My 350d died afetr being dropped, so I want another Canon, I have the lenses etc.

Now the 350d was adequate but this seems like a much bargain?

What am I likely to gain?

Will you ever use the video functionality? If so, get the 550D...

it's the evolution of the 350D (about 3 model releases on I think? 350D-400D-450D-500D)... so you get lots of new features, such as: better AF, full HD video, liveview and more... it's an 'older' model though, been replaced by the 550D, hence why it's on closeout...

You can get it cheaper than that as well, check out this website for comparison shopping: Camerapricebuster.co.uk

Much better LCD, awful lot more pixels and video along with loads of new features too
Still a plastic body though and the extra pixels could make you want to buy more expensive lenses (if you haven't already got them)

Apparently its the biggest selling DSLR in the world, no inherent faults that I have read about, so go for it I reckon

Having said all that I prefer the larger metal bodied cameras such as my 40D and the 50D can probably be bought at a reasonable price now the 60D has hit the shelves

The 500 doesn't do video as well as the 550d. I think the main difference is that it doesn't do full HD properly (1080P at 30fps, rather at a weird 20fps), and that it doesn't do 720p at 60fps (useful for slowmo mtb shots?).

If you're not bothered by that, then get the 500d.

Why not OneStopDigital?

£426.

http://www.onestop-digital.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_22&products_id=503&osCsid=171cca55aefb6134e2526c7a38c5e73d

I always go there first. I bought a lens recently, and I couldn't have saved more than about £15-£20 buying secondhand! They're consitantly the cheapest, and the stuff arrives in 3-4 days. If anyone can beat OSD in general, please let me know! Seriously..... 🙂

Yeah the implementation of video in the 550D is much better and it has an external mic socket.

But if you plan on not using the video, it's not a worry.

Image quality in general is up on my outgoing 400D as well but I think the 400D was a bit of a lemon in canon's DSLR history.

£24 actually... 😉

And who cares? £24 in my pocket is better than £24 in someone elses. 🙂

OSD can't be beat IME.

Actually a very fine camera and the 10mp sensor was developed from their more expensive camera. Know a lot of people think the image quality is better from the 400D than the later models in that range

Very happy with my 40D which has a similar sensor, great for noise and excellent fps rate too.

Regarding the build quality, daresay the plastic is just as tough as the metal body, but the larger body does feel right for me and think the extra weight helps with balance when using a heavier lens.

Kerso is often cheaper than OSD, and provides UK receipts for cashback etc

I get very muddy underexposed images from the 400D, a lot of early adopters at least reported this. It's fine but I never felt the need to post process as much on my 300D...
