Man U have given out their financial results for the last year, and revealed they are nearly £1000 million in debt (is that a billion?).

From what was one of the top three Clubs in Europe 20 years ago, with massive worldwide revenue, HTF do they get to be in such a position? Well, clearly selling to the Glazers was the main thing, who have sold everything off, and took out bank loans in the clubs name. How much have they taken out of the Club now?

And if the dont win the Europa League (they’ll need a bit more than good luck for that), they will be even worse off next year.

And to improve things they bring in Chelsea Jim and his unique brand of sporting disaster management. Rumours are starting to swirl in some of the rags about player discontent/Amorim wanting out already.

I don’t think anyone knows for sure, but IIRC I think it’s just under a couple of billion they’ve personally taken out of the club.

The figure for the debt they loaded onto the club (700 - 900 million, depending on who you believe), after borrowing the money to buy it, has never been reduced. They’ve just paid the huge interest payments on it (yet more billions). Sir Jim’s £1billion+ he paid for his 25% stake hasn’t touched the sides and has just disappeared into the financial black hole. Without that injection, the club would be bankrupt. It’s quite staggering that what the Glazers have done is actually legal. It’s literally daylight robbery

Revenues are massively down without champions league football (and without any hope of it) and just the fact that what’s going on the pitch is so absolutely dire. They’re just awful to watch. What’s going on off the pitch is a total car crash. A bad soap opera. The ineptitude of the (mis)management is total

People are voting with their feet and wallets. The supporters have had enough. It’s a nice day today and we’re the early kick off, so I could watch another abject display as David Moyes extracts his revenge with an easy win, or I could head out for a ride and then watch MOTD try to put some ‘highlights’ together tonight

So I’ll check in on the thread when I get back from my ride, obviously. I’m not letting those clowns ruin another weekend.  If anyone feels like enduring watching it, feel free to do me a summary, though I doubt it’ll contain any surprises

Enjoy your ride. I'll be watching Reading v Birmingham. Reading's demise is somewhat more damaging than any current premier league club.

You’ll be aware Binners predictably they were utterly turgid for 70 minutes, pretty fortunate to draw. Spurs, West Ham and Palace all winning today, I reckon you should just scrape 16th this season.

The only difference between City and United is that at least City are solvent. A club so riddled with debt and teetering on the edge of financial apocalypse but still spending like one of the richest clubs in the world is equally unfair to the rest with more modest finances.

I’d say the opposite. If you know you’ve got a player that United are interested in, just slap 60 million on the asking price and they’re so stupid they’ll pay it in a heartbeat. That and the fact that teams like Bournemouth or Brighton who’s entire squads cost the same as Rasmus Hojlands right buttock can rock up and turn us over in our own back yard without breaking a sweat.

Glad I went out for a really good ride in the sunshine, rather than watch that rubbish today

The crazy thing is, the Glazers although owning and running Man Utd and being extraordinarily wealthy probably have less money than me, if someone called in all their debts.

I listened to The Price of Football podcast last week and they reckoned even with the debt and terrible squad they are nowhere near financial trouble and it's being used as a smokescreen by friendly media to excuse what those in charge are up to. Which is a shame as it'd be hilarious if they went under!

They simply need to stop buying awful players for huge fees. IMO there are some pretty poisonous characters in the dressing room too who need removing, however good they are. As a Leeds fan I hope they ignore what I've just said as it's very funny.

@PrinceJohn - its the age old adage though innit? If you owe the banks 50 grand, that your problem, if you owe them 1.3 billion, its their problem

Indeed, and then putting them on long contracts, with no break clauses, on absolutely insane wages. Casemiro is still occassionally hobbling around the centre circle on his zimmer frame, picking up a truly bonkers £350,000 a week

I follow some of the United Fanzine accounts and someone noted that yesterday was exactly a year since Luke Shaw last played for the club  - though he was fit anough to play for Engerland in the Euro's last summer - and in that time he has picked up £8.5 million in wages. And then theres Phil Jones and his nine years of not playing - in the middle of which he was given a new contract - on £120,000 a week.

A new banner for the Stretford End to replace the 'How many years since City won the league?' sign, just keep a running total of Phil Jones' wages vs minutes played.

Solid performance after looking shaky at the back v Villa and Everton. And Wolves to an extent. Probably a massive boost to see Haaland out and only have to deal with the endless dead ends Doku and Savinho run into. There’s a player in each of them for sure, if Pep still has the desire. Foden though, what’s happened?

Doku ran Trent ragged all game, but no end product at all! City were so blunt in attack, all that possession but it looked so easy to keep them out…

Doku reminds me of Sterling at that age, all the rest of the tricks, plenty of pace, with no end product. Looks like a rabbit in the headlights when it comes to the final ball

Citeh look completely toothless without robocop up front. Foden seems to be doing a Rashford. Going from unplayable one season to being easily dealt with the next.

Shaun Wright-Phillips was the OG of pacy wing play with no end product.  In fact he only ever seemed to look up once he'd run past the goal line and out of play!

I see Clever Jim's latest wheeze is to close the staff canteen

Just in case you were worried though - players will still get free food! You wouldn't want Casemiro having to pay for his pie and mash out of his own pocket.

By screwing the little people, the way he has performed at UTD just lays bare how corrupt the system is in enabling the wealthy to profit from misery, and how extreme it is rigged in their favour. There have been multiple studies that show opportunity and luck is the biggest differentiator in success and failure, it has **** all to do with hard work and "brilliance".

Brilliant result for Leeds after a very nervy half hour in the first half and Meslier pushing the ball into his own net.  Thought we were lucky to get to half time only 1-0 down, but 3 fabulous goals from Firpo, Tanaka and a wonderful shot from Piroe to make it 3-1. A gap of 5 points to the Blades and 7 to Burnley gives us a strong position to get automatic promotion.  It would help my nerves if we didn't keep going down 1-0 before we start playing!

I said to my mates on What’s App that we’d win 3-1 (just after we went one down). I don’t think I actually believed it, but I had a hunch. We just seem way too strong right now.

I’d always assumed he was some sort of Dyson type boffin but he is just someone who got lucky in Private Equity and that’s not necessarily proof of being a great entrepreneur, more just cut costs and then punt it on.

We've thrown away more points from winning positions than any other team in the league. I always thought it would be a one season adventure.  We've a few good players I suspect we will lose if we go down, possibly the manager as well, so coming back up would be a struggle.

That said, if we could manage to hang on to some of those leads we could put a run together,  but matches and "easier" games are running out.

Listening to the Football Weekly podcast they made the point that at least your mob are giving it a go, unlike Leicester and Southampton who seem to have given up and are going through the motions. Unfortunately and predictably all the games you won last season with the odd goal in 5 or 7 are going against this. You should walk through the champo next season though, if you keep hold of your squad.

As a bitter Leeds fan I think it's very amusing seeing the bottom three as it is although it doesn't bode well if we go up! Saying that, as pointed out on FW, Leicester and Southampton still have a large amount of players that were not good enough for the prem last time and sold some of the ones that were so what did they expect?

This afternoon should be interesting. Brighton v Newcastle should be a belter

I suppose I'll have to endure another 90 minutes of swearing at the telly later. When they were on about it on Five Live earlier I forget that we are actually defending the trophy. We've been so rubbish for the last few seasons its easy to forget we actually won it last year and got to the final the year before. God only knows how! It wasn't just a lucky draw either. Could we fluke it again this year? Not a chance! How awful we are has hit new levels this season.

We were as appalling as I thought we’d be. We looked considerably better once he’d taken a few of the overpaid duds off and put the kids on instead. I don’t know why he doesn’t just play the under 21’s squad instead of these donkeys

Rasmus Hojland is now eclipsing Antony as the worst buy in football history. 65 million for an alleged striker who has started pretty much every game but hasn’t scored in nearly 3 months, has only 2 EPL goals and no assists all season and has had less shots on goal than our defenders. He’s absolutely stealing a living! He wouldn’t get into my local pub side but starts every game as we haven’t got anyone else. He makes Darwin Nunez look like Messi

He’s poor, works hard I suppose but for the money you’d want better. There were rumours last season about United players not passing to him as they’d seen how poor he was in training.

Funny Rooney calling Amorim naive - when he’s critical of your management, you know times are hard.

Well that was a great weekend of football.  Shrewsbury town managed to

  • equal the record for the fastest red card (13 sec).
  • lose 3-1
  • drop to the bottom of the table, now 8 points from safety.

At least Wrexham didn't win! 😉

Anyone else think the red was a bit harsh? I mean it's arguable, but you've seen people get away with much worse. Sergio Ramos wouldn't even be booked for that

Gordon definitely deserved a red, not so much for violent conduct, as it was too faff-arse to be described as that, but just for being a dick!

Should have cashed out. Mrs Binners would have had that as a draw

Anyway, not to worry, I’ve got watching us get absolutely battered by Arsenal to look forward to tomorrow. Will our 65 million quid striker actually do something he hasn’t done for 20 games since early December and have a shot on target?

Of course he won’t. He’ll do what he always does and just aimlessly wander around in the opposition half to absolutely no effect whatsoever.

There are Southampton defenders who’ve had more shots on goal than he has

It’s going to be some battle for the champions league places, other than the top two spots, especially as fifth should get a place. City potentially missing out would have been unthinkable a few months ago.

What a lovely bunch the Rotherham fans were at Wrexham yesterday.  I know every club has its idiots, us included, but having an England flag with Stop the Boats across the middle, a picture of Farage in one corner and On The Charge With Nigel Farage in another was just pathetic.  At least we sent them home empty handed.

So the players are not good enough and overpaid, Sir Jim? No shit Sherlock?

Nice of the bloke who signed the last batch of duds and put them on ludicrous contracts to notice. Unfortunately we’re now stuck with them all. Casemiro is apparently refusing to leave unless his ridiculous £350,000 a week is matched, which just isn’t going to happen, so he’ll sit out his contract (costing tens of millions) and leave on a free, like Pogba did.

Meanwhile Antony and Sancho, combined transfer fee paid: £160 million, are out on loan at other clubs, while United are still paying a percentage of their wages and will be sold for a fraction of that. Rashford is at Villa.

Mainoo and Garnacho will be sold in the summer as they’re the only ones the club can make a profit on. Leaving us with a bunch of overpaid donkeys, the worst of which is a 65 million pound ‘striker’ who’s managed 15 shots in his last 20 games, none of which found the back of the net

I could go on…

The mismanagement of the club is absolutely off the chart and seems to have got worse under the new part-owners

"We are going to sell Hojland and Onana, but before we do, let me talk down their value on the international transfer market, and further destroy their morale for the final matches of the season..."

The man's an absolute plum. I feel sad for Hojland, sure, he's not in form, but he's a young player, and they could allow him to leave with a bit of dignity.

It’s incredible, isn’t it? They’re just cynically trying to transfer the blame away from themselves and their own costly and catastrophic management decisions and on to individual players and even worse, the club staff.

Absolutely nobody is buying their nonsense

Close the canteen and make a load of people redundant having just seen the non-sacking then sacking of Ten Hag, then the pursuit and subsequent sacking of Dan Ashworth cost the club 25 million?

Absolute clowns!

I'm genuinely bemused as to why Ratcliffe bought into United in the first place. He's not even a majority shareholder, just gets to try and rescue the playing side of things, which seems like a thankless, doomed enterprise. I don't get the thing where they've taken Dave Brailsford who is brilliant at running a cycling team, and parachuted him into a sport he knows very little about, weakening both the cycling and football teams in the process.

I don't get the whole utter tone-deaf PR disaster they seem to be doubling down on over and over again. Morale inside the club must be absolutely shot to pieces, god only knows what it's like for the players seeing the support staff being treated like that.

It just seems nuts.

I'm a gooner and while the club under Arteta isn't perfect - letting Smith-Rowe and Vieira go in the summer without bringing in any sort of alternative back-up to Ødegaard, looks like a big error, it's the lack of traditional Wenger-style skill pixies that's preventing us from breaking down low-block, mass defences rather than the lack of a centre forward I reckon - a lot of what he's done is spot on.

Maybe it's just a simple 'running a football club is different to asset-stripping and streamlining oil refineries' thing. But whatever it is, seems pretty sad.
