I'm going to switchbacks in April. Only flybe go from Exeter and they say they do not guarantee to take the bike if the flight is full.
Has anyone had a bike bumped off a Flybe flight? WHat happened?
(I have got alternatives, but I'm just trying to assess the risk)
none of the carriers do. they all say they're on a 'standby' basis, if you read the small print. it will get there, it just may not get there when you hope it will.
wouldn't worry about it too much. we went through exeter in november with, i think, twelve bikes on board? something like that. i think there were even more coming back.
if you're using a box, don't seal it up. they're not really equipped to deal with bikes in exeter and don't have an xray machine big enough to scan them, so have to search them by hand, unless they put them through the freight entrance.
I had a bike left behind when I flew both to and from the US with BA on the same trip. I was most upset. I asked the woman at the counter where it was and she replied that she didn't know, it was probably sat in a corridor somewhere ๐ฏ
Both times however it was on the next flight and was couriered immediately to my door, arriving late at night too!
I checked with easyjets t&c's and couldn't find the standby bit that is obvious in the flybe t&c's.
molgrips on major routes I would be happy taking the risk as there would be frequent flights. I'm flying on a sat and flybe only have one flight that day and don't fly from exeter the next day, so potentially I'll miss at least two days riding out of six..
Toys.. yeah I was just padding the thread out with my own experiences ๐ No idea how Flybe would behave.. it was more of a plug for BA really. Not that that helps you in any way either ๐
Does sound risky though - can you hire bikes in the event of yours not making it?
We flew Flybe, Exeter to Malaga, in November. There were around ten of us with bikes on the flight out and maybe thirteen on the flight back. Some of us had condensed our bikes into bike bags, others had massive great cardboard boxes the size of a tractors (well almost). We all got on no problems. The Malaga flight uses one of Flybe's jet planes and not one of their titchy twin propeller jobbies. HTH
Birchy1 , of this forum, ignoring the advice not to use the conveyor belts with a boxed-up bike at Malaga Airport....
when i flew to costa rica via america with american airlines their t&c's stated that they don't take bikes between april and september (not sure about these actual dates but basically during what they deemed to be the busy holiday period) so double check
never had any problems with easyjet, jet2, KLM or BA
No molgrips, you misunderstand me, thanks for the experience, its valuable as it makes me think it isn't worth the risk..
I might post it (59 quid) or go with easyjet as I called them and they said bikes go on as a priority (said not wrote)..
I want to drive anyway I ruddy hate flying..
EDIT - Slugwash that's reassuring thanks.I can hire if it goes tits up so maybe just book it with them..
Drive then.. can't beat a good road trip ๐
Think Flybe use tiny planes (Embraer?). Same problem with skis/snowboards afaik.
chuckle.
well, i'm glad you've been reassured by Slugwash. he was on the same flights as me, and that goon in the picture. ๐
don't sweat it. you'll get on with your bike too.
