Making a bit of a hybrid for my dad as his current drop bar set-up doesn't work for him.
Does anyone know if you can just use an MTB groupset on a road frame? Or do I need to buy a specific road/touring groupset?
It's a standard road frame, screw in BB, external cabling, 10 speed road hub, etc. Only challenge is that due to his age it'll need to have a triple.
Oh, and the frame has caliper brakes and no mounts for anything else.

I fear it'll be cheaper to buy a new bike, but where's the fun in that?!

Unless the frame is something worth keeping it probably is cheaper to just buy a new bike and sell the old one. What frame is it?

My brother did the same for my dad's George Longstaff when he got a bit long in the tooth. Is your dad's drop bar already a triple or not?

The frame is nothing special, it's currently got a Tiagra triple groupset on it, but it's on it's way out so it'll like need replacing anyway.

His requirements are:
Flat bars - He doesn't use the drops and is more comfortable on flats
Triple crankset - He won't buy an eBike so needs the winching gear
Rim brakes -As that's what the frame fits. Could possibly do cable disks if we bought a new frame.

Probably do it for around £100.

Bar, grips, longer stem, brake levers should be relatively cheap enough.

Tiagra shifters will be the most expensive, around £60-70 new

I think I still have the parts from my dad's bike but they are 3x9 flat bar road shifters, front mech and brake levers.

I changed a Genesis CDR over to flat bars by adding (10 speed)SLX changers, rear mech and cable pull brakes for MrsFH. It all worked fine and she uses it a lot more than when it had drops.
