6km of fun, and a km-and-a-bit of boggy Somme horror!
Haha well yea, it just made you concentrate a bit. Think of it as extra skills training 😉
Interesting thread - but has nobody questioned what the OP did to upset his mate?
Don't get why his pal entered him for sport in his first ever XC race, especially if he's a bit overweight (apologies if I read that wrong)?
Looking forward to my next XC race in a couple of weeks. It's strangely enjoyable just thrashing yourself as hard as you can. I don't think I'd be able to ride for 2hrs at more than 170bpm in any other circumstances that weren't life-threatening.
The only DaveH I can see in Sport came 36/51, so if that's him he was in the right category.
Unlike the skinsuited guys at the front of Fun 😛
I wore a skinsuit for a bit of a laugh - but in fairness I did win the SS category...
I loved the course, thought it was absolutely brilliant. What a cracking day!
The point against Camelbaks (IMHO) is you don't really need to drink at all when you've got a 2 hour tops race on. I run for more than that without drinking, and I think the benefits of hydrating 'during' on these events are overstated. A bottle is adequate to grab a swig on the fireroad (you really won't lose much speed when practiced) if you find you do need something.
Not that it matters, run what you like till you're good enough to have a coach to tell you not too 🙂
I'd want to drink in a 2 hour race, for sure. 1 hour maybe not.
I was in the "fun" race, came third! Defiantly no skinsuit here! I did have a great time sprinting off the line and battling for the first half lap. Unfortunately couldn’t touch those two buggers up the hills! My kids where gutted their was no podium presentation for fun categories. Maybe Ill have to drop the baggy shorts, the spicy & a few pounds(a stone if I’m honest) and enter a "proper" category.
I never had time to drink, I was either flat out breathing or needed both hands on the bars for descents. In the end I stopped carrying any water for 90min XC races.
I've ridden courses where its hard to find a place to have a drink and I definitely feel worse after the race than compared to races where I have drank.
The course at the weekend was pretty good for places to drink, although I spent most of the race by myself so I'm not sure how it would have been if I'd been battling people m
