Interesting how most of the press have edited this bit out of Fergies post match comments.
…why do people pander to him?

The thread was started to point out that Fergie was debatably ungracious in defeat but mainly how heavily edited his comments were essentially snipping out the bit that makes him look like a bad looser. That, I thought, was worth a discussion.

I heard all the comments the OP quoted on Sky and have read them in full in the sports pages of both newspapers I've looked at today. The OP also (obviously) heard the full quote somewhere, so I'm not really convinced of the argument that the press have pandered to Fergie and selectively quoted him to make him look better.

from a Palace fan, so no bias either way.

I occasionally think, during conversations with ostensibly adult males, that my lack of attention to Premiership football puts me at a disadvantage. Reading the previous stupidity has reassured me that I have no need to worry.

I'd still be a bit concerned, that level of sanctimony must a sign of some shortcoming.

Tevez wins.

As a Man Utd fan I'm shocked, insulted and wounded by that picture. That's quite unbelievable.

Good job you're probably from London or somewhere then; seeing it first hand might have made you cry 😀

That sign was in reference to the Untitled manager when asked if City would ever overtake the Untitled and win the Premier League replied in his usual arrogant way "Not in my lifetime" so not quite what it seems but I would like to say that was a properly crap sign and I would prefer it if Mancini got rid of Carlos Tevez.

RIP Fergie. That deserves a faceplant. Only he could have picked up that placard from a fan without knowing its meaning.

Well he'll be more sellable now after his return so ManC won't lose out too much.

Can't believe Scholes has resigned- he'll be 38 next season!

For any ManU fans getting worried out there, this word is missing a very important hyphen. 8)

I saw that sign first hand and Tevez definitely knew it was a bit much as he kept it hidden and only waved it briefly as he went passed us. The rest of the city players kept a good distance from it.

It is a reference to the not in my life time comment as is the song city fans sing about having a party with jelly and ice cream when Ferguson dies! A bit much maybe given he is in his 70s.

I though the RIP meant as in you will never win the league again in a bit poor taste but no point making a meal of it. If you cannot get a little carried away at a title celebration then frankly when can you.
Tevez is a bit of a one though, great player but a poor person,a bit like Ferguson

Yeah, come on JY, let's have some different ones.

City fans worshipping Tevez now are they? Hmmm. Nice.

There has been a fair few classless things coming from that end of town since the 'new money' arrived. Say what u want about United, but the money has mostly been earned - gate receipts/big sponsorships/tv money mostly because of success, history of the club and the world wide name. They've never got to the stage where they have bought players wholsesale to stop other teams from having them, which Chelsea and City have. Chelsea is relevant cos people predicted United's demise back then too. Both City and Chelsea would most likely not be in the top flight/solvent without a sugar daddy.

United did well this year with what they had, an achievement to finish level on points against all that quality. At least we didn't finish with less points than our neighbours or 36 points off the pace. Loddick?

As for Fegies comments being ungracious - its been what Mancini has been saying all year himself!!

Just to remind the Blue half of Manchester what you were singing about Mr Tevez a few seasons ago

Always makes me laugh. Oh.... I wouldn't advise playing this if you're sat in the office

Most City fans dislike Tevez immensely although accept that a solution was required to end the mess he created.

Whilst selling him in January was the preferred option it didn’t happen and therefore it was a choice of effectively terminating his contract allowing him to rock up anywhere and commend any wages he could get with no compensation for City (a poor option) or bring him back with a view to sell him in the summer (another poor option). It is a best of two bad options approach and city fans accept the clubs decision – fingers crossed he is sold this summer and never play in England again.

Little story from last year. I was in a hotel lobby in London and City were staying there. Mancini and a few of his fellow Italians were chatting and Mancini signing the odd autograph/photo. He seems a nice guy to be fair. This middle aged lady then goes over and asks for a photo, Mancini obliges with a smile. As she walks back towards her husband, clearly audible to everyone, she says to her husband "oh my god, who was that?". Que eye roll from Mancini and lots of banter /piss taking from his mates.

Again: 'it's not fair they've got more money and we deserved our money and we nearly won and anyway thought you didn't like Tevez and Liverpool are crap' 😆

Have a watch of this, it might help.

Football really does seem to bring out the worst in people
I do find it odd tham more people are pleased Man u lost it that the fact City won it.

Still wait 20 years and if they keep spending I am sur eyou will have switched [s]hatred, jealousy. loyalty[/s] who knows what you call it to City or in lodders wildest dreams Liverpool probably with Sir bob Paisley at the helm

City winning it one day was inevitable and what a cracking end to a cracking season.

Replace the words "Man U" with "England", and you've just described how the rest of the world (or at least our home nations neighbours) feel about the international team too. And they're not even successful!

I've always had a soft spot for city, been to watch them a couple of times with my best mate from school who is a big city fan. They were always such a joke of a club to support really so it's nice to see them do well.

The money they have is ridiculous but football has been a joke wrt money for years so why not.

You give plenty of shit about Liverpool JY, not sure why you get upset about people taking the piss out of Man U. It's inevitable people are going to enjoy seeing the team that have dominated for years get knocked off their perch by their local rivals. There is a lot of bitterness now coming from some Man U fans basically saying city didn't deserve it or they cheated by having so much money.

It's true that Ferguson did a great job nearly competing with that spending power, but a lot of the comments are pretty churlish.

Still wait 20 years and if they keep spending I am sur eyou will have switched hatred, jealousy. loyalty who knows what you call it to City or in lodders wildest dreams Liverpool probably with Sir bob Paisley at the helm

Bit uncalled for really.

Man City vs Newcastle cost of team £122 million
Swansea vs Man U cost of team £120 million

It really is silly saying City bought the league.
Carroll £35m
Torres £50m
Aguero £38m
Some transfers work out better than others...

I've even seen people lose the run of themselves over a racism issue just because of the teams involved.

Anyway, my disgruntlement has always been more about Ferguson than ManUre.

To be honest a quick scan of the comments on this thread has done little to elevate the opinion of this outsider.

By the way, is that graph correct? Did a football team actually spend well over £1 billion on players? Is that in a year or a decade or WTF!!

Alex Ferguson - amazing manager but I'm not a fan of his personality at all from what I've seen
Add to that list Roy Keane and Gary Neville

Scholes, Giggs and Cantona were superb though and i have a soft spot for Solskjaer (sp?) for some reason. I was rooting for Man U in the famous Bayern Munich final.

But one of the reasons I'm not a fan of Man U has just come from the feeling of them being the original massive corporate sell-outs in football. Of course every other club that could has now followed them pretty much and some have taken it to extremes. Football now is beyond a joke in terms of the finances, and City are the ultimate example, but it's a bit rich for Man U fans to talk about money ruining the game.

I know a few Man U fans and most of them say they much prefer watching FC United. I've been to watch Morecambe recently and enjoyed it more than the last time I went to Anfield. Football lost its 'soul' a long time ago - and Man U fans used to be cheering it along every step of the way.

It really is silly saying City bought the league.

so what you are saying is the wealth of the wealthiest clubs does not allow them to sign or buy the best players and money plays no part in the success 😕
Yes teams can do well or ok with or without money - eg Newcastle out performed, Liverpool underperformed but Swansea are never challenging for the EPL without serious money. It is what the new football is about
You give plenty of shit about Liverpool JY,

I am giving grief to lodders
Can you find anything of substance on threads?
You know full well what I say everytime a thread like this comes up so I will repeat it again Liverpool are a great team with a great tradition and the envy of all [ EPL aside] in this country. You will never walk alone is a hairs on the back of the neck moment for anyone and I have stood in the Kop and cheered them on
I love football I don’t hate teams though fans can be idiots
You know all of this and you now you are not describing my views accurately and like i said it brings out the worst in folk
+1, those comments do nothing to elevate the impression that outsiders have of football and the scum really should refrain from saying nasty things about Liverpool.

you called them Bin dippers DS and it was a dig at lodders not at Liverpool

I should have just called them “melon farmers” and listened to the sound of silence then eh grum …have you noticed the RIP fergie thread yet and got outraged Grum?
I repeat the point about football bringing out the worst in folk and judging by this thread I should include myself in that evaluation so I guess I add football debates to the list of topics that are beast avoided on STW
Or for Grum just blame myself for being so nasty and rude whilst everyone else played and spoke so nicely

Banter is fine but this is not banter- the city fans have porobably been the nicest tbh

Tevez isn't the brightest and that was stupid/unpleasant of him. Loddrik doesn't seem like the brightest either and seems slightly pathologically bitter. HTH 🙂

I dunno, Loddrik definitely takes it too far and is just unpleasant really. I was just taking the piss like I do with my friends who are Man U fans IRL.

Some people don't like it up 'em. 😉

http://www.transferleague.co.uk/

some interesting figures regarding tranfers, as a Utd fan, fair play to City for winning it, we both had little slip ups, however that 6-1 came back to haunt us.
Hope we keep Vidic fit this year.........

No doubt that only a few teams have the resources to buy in the quality players, but they have to be the right players, playing the right tactics and have a lot of luck.

What grum said.

Ferguson, in a way, became bigger than the club - his utterances carried more and more weight over the years - and when he understod this, he used it to his advantage. You only have to look at how the media report his every word on a referee's performance, sometimes even before a game. Referees are human, and yes, some are better than others but it's only when everyone is behind them that they perform well. Putting them under the kind of pressure he does has always been one of Ferguson's modus operandi. Sending Keane and Neville(G) out as his lieutenants to barrack referees on the pitch while he did his work off of it was another. He has been one of the key figures in the undermining of the respect for referees in the game - and that is unforgiveable. Oh, you said something horrible about me, I'm not going to talk to you for years and years because that's how I work.

He has also wound up other managers - but whether they should be a bit more grown up about it is a moot point. I'd prefer managers talked more about football than barbed comments in the media that they know are going to get blown out of all proportion. Ferguson has always known that in a war of words, his will get shouted louder and has used this to his advantage too.

There's no denying that watching them play when they really were destroying other sides was entertaining. Scholes, Giggs (amazing personality), Cantona, Beckham...all wonderful to watch.

There hasn't been a competition they've won that hasn't been deserved (if we strip all the spending money arguments out).

In fairness to him, he's generally complimentary to oppositions when beaten - I think he's got better at this over the years than worse.

When he's gone from the game, I won't miss him.

Some people don't like it up 'em.

Mleh Just think it oversteps the banter lines. Dont mind it from the city fans who have IMHO been subdued..its like they cannot beleieve it either tbh [ that is not a dig]

Ferguson is a complex man by which i mean he is a great manager but an absolute ****
I think there is something about winners - they have a win at all costs mentality which makes them abhored or loved depending on whether you are with them or agianst them.
I am personally not that sure about him and tactics. It was cowardice IMHO at City yes we may have lost but we could have actually tried.

I have a friend who knows him fairly well and he is apparently humorous and affable in real life but they said that about Gordon Brown so who knows.
