I need some new music in my life so looking for recommendations ๐Ÿ™‚

Need to be unique enough to stand out, currently listening to stuff like the Jezabels, Katy B and Paloma Faith so any genre is open to consideration. Like music with real feelings and power behind it, stuff like Alanis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill rather than her lightweight other albums.

Stuff to while away long road journeys and for a quick listen please!!

More folky:

Thea Gilmore

Kate Rusby

All of them are amazing if you get the chance to see them live

If you like rather good female vocalists, we'll take it as a given you already own everything P J Harvey has ever recorded?

New darlings of the scene, London Grammar. Great in small doses, but a bit syrupy for me

MIA
Lorde
Beth Orton
Laura Marling (again)
Joanna Newsom
PJ Harvey (again)

That's a reasonable mix there.

Go retro

Janis Joplin - doesn't get more unique
Dusty Springfield - classic white soul
Nina Simone - blues, gospel, soul and classics

It was listening to London Grammar at my sister's place last night that got me thinking of other stuff!! Haven't got that much female stuff currently, most of my music is punk/metal/electro, must be mellowing in my 30's 8)

Some good stuff so far, keep them coming!!

Beverly Knight is an awesome singer. Just step away from the commercial songs.

She's very passionate, check her acoustic version of Angels, and this ISNT the most passionate I've seen her;

But by far the most passionate female singer I've seen is Mary J Blige live. That is a heart rendering performance.

Blimey John, they're going back a bit!!

Polica have done some good stuff:

if you like London Grammar, Alunageorge could be worth a go:

Saw this band last year, great voice (attractive too ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Hey people,

I never post on here but the world (or at least you guys) need to know about these

http://www.arrogants.com/songs.html

I stumbled upon them a few years ago and cant get enough. Unfortunately commercial success never really happened and they have since split up and gone their seperate ways.

On a plus note all their music is free to download on their website linked above.

Give it a go, you might like it as much as i do (and if you dont it was free anyway).

Rob

Not new or 'different' but Suzanne Vega deserves a mention. Perhaps the Suzanne Vega and Solitude Standing albums. Oh and Sinead O'Connor, Kate Bush...

Quite an old album, but....

I am Shelby Lynne by erm, Shelby Lynne is a good one.

A bit like a moody, more country version of Sheryl Crow.

NME faves Waxahatchee are worth a listen - bit of solo from Kate Crutchfield:

Oh yes, from Cheezybeanz link, School of Seven Bells and the wonderful Martina Topley-Bird.

Anyone who likes Tori Amos might like Regina Spektor:

Nina Simone

With a bit of Joan Armatrading and Tracy Chapman thrown in for good measure.

Banks is great. Not got loads of stuff out yet, but an album's coming soon apparently. She's also pretty good live. Check out her soundcloud for more:

i'd give Simone White a try if you want some sunday morning-esque type of tunes.

or Susheela Ramen if you want some Asian female vocals with a slight western cross over
