I need some new music in my life so looking for recommendations ๐
Need to be unique enough to stand out, currently listening to stuff like the Jezabels, Katy B and Paloma Faith so any genre is open to consideration. Like music with real feelings and power behind it, stuff like Alanis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill rather than her lightweight other albums.
Stuff to while away long road journeys and for a quick listen please!!
Anna Calvi
Laura Marling
you'll thank me later
If you want power - try The Woods by Sleater Kinney.
Planningtorock for something a bit unusual.
or
will be back with more
tori amos
tracey chapman
not singers as such;
Elsiane
The Knife
More folky:
Thea Gilmore
Kate Rusby
All of them are amazing if you get the chance to see them live
If you like rather good female vocalists, we'll take it as a given you already own everything P J Harvey has ever recorded?
Lykke Li
Groups with female singers:
Summer Camp
Camera Obscura
Cheers,
Jamie
New darlings of the scene, London Grammar. Great in small doses, but a bit syrupy for me
MIA
Lorde
Beth Orton
Laura Marling (again)
Joanna Newsom
PJ Harvey (again)
That's a reasonable mix there.
Go retro
Janis Joplin - doesn't get more unique
Dusty Springfield - classic white soul
Nina Simone - blues, gospel, soul and classics
Good call DezB - forgot Churches in a similar vein, but even more poppy
Heart.

Beth Hart:
I'm in love with Katie Melua.
It was listening to London Grammar at my sister's place last night that got me thinking of other stuff!! Haven't got that much female stuff currently, most of my music is punk/metal/electro, must be mellowing in my 30's 8)
Some good stuff so far, keep them coming!!
All About Eve
Siouxsie & The Banshees
Xmal Deutschland
Faith & The Muse
The Eden House
Cocteau Twins
This Mortal Coil
Dead Can Dance
Beverly Knight is an awesome singer. Just step away from the commercial songs.
She's very passionate, check her acoustic version of Angels, and this ISNT the most passionate I've seen her;
But by far the most passionate female singer I've seen is Mary J Blige live. That is a heart rendering performance.
Cat Power
Blimey John, they're going back a bit!!
Polica have done some good stuff:
if you like London Grammar, Alunageorge could be worth a go:
Saw this band last year, great voice (attractive too ๐ )
Hey people,
I never post on here but the world (or at least you guys) need to know about these
http://www.arrogants.com/songs.html
I stumbled upon them a few years ago and cant get enough. Unfortunately commercial success never really happened and they have since split up and gone their seperate ways.
On a plus note all their music is free to download on their website linked above.
Give it a go, you might like it as much as i do (and if you dont it was free anyway).

Angela Gossow:
I work with Beverley Knights sister. True fact.
Laura Mavula
London Grammer
Some good stuff here ...

Not new or 'different' but Suzanne Vega deserves a mention. Perhaps the Suzanne Vega and Solitude Standing albums. Oh and Sinead O'Connor, Kate Bush...
The Duke Spirit.
Right, time to comment on these women's looks and get the thread closed.....
I'm sure you're aware of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Gossip's first 2 albums...?
Quite an old album, but....
I am Shelby Lynne by erm, Shelby Lynne is a good one.
A bit like a moody, more country version of Sheryl Crow.
erykah badu
or for more hip hoppy /urban - missy Elliot
CountZero's list on the link Cheezybeanz provided should take a while to work through ๐
bjork
mary j blige
whitney houston before coke happened
chaka khan
aretha franklin
blondie
For me it has to be Nina persson poss the best voice ever !
She was in
The cardigans
Acamp
And solo stuff
NME faves Waxahatchee are worth a listen - bit of solo from Kate Crutchfield:
Oh yes, from Cheezybeanz link, School of Seven Bells and the wonderful Martina Topley-Bird.
I don't know why but i'm not usually a fan of female vocalists (except yeah, yeahs, yeahs) but I LOVE THIS.....
One of my favourite records from one of my favourite bands
+1 for The Duke Spirit as well
Anyone who likes Tori Amos might like Regina Spektor:
Nina Simone
With a bit of Joan Armatrading and Tracy Chapman thrown in for good measure.
Nico Vega, damn this lady has some pipes on her.
Banks is great. Not got loads of stuff out yet, but an album's coming soon apparently. She's also pretty good live. Check out her soundcloud for more:

i'd give Simone White a try if you want some sunday morning-esque type of tunes.
or Susheela Ramen if you want some Asian female vocals with a slight western cross over
Last one from me
