Jan Svankmeyer's Alice:
Well worth getting the DVD. Brilliant, probbly the best film adaptation of the book ever made.
I always liked the french film 'city of lost children'
bit bizarre, but I really liked it.
The Big Blue (or Subway, or Nikita, or Leon - basically any of Luc Besson's earlier films).
Just reminded me how brilliant The Big Blue is. Compulsory student viewing for me in the nineties.
A French film called 'Micmacs'. Weird but entertaining.
Bullshot and Plunkett and MacLeane +1
Mesrine parts 1 and 2
french film with subtitles, but easily one the best films ive ever seen of any genre...
A French film called 'Micmacs'. Weird but entertaining.
One of my favourites too.
If we're not stuck on Hollywood films, I highly recommend Diva, a very stylish thriller by Jean-Luc Godard.
Diva! Bingo, someone else has heard of it. Huzza. Love that film, bought the book recently, and there's not much the same really. Prefer the film, really. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is another I really love, quite possibly the only Steve Martin film I've ever found funny.
The Fall - a decent story, but the visuals are what make the film as they are superb.
I've seen Down By Law, I even remembered the icecream quote before reading down the thread. Can't remember anything else about it though except that it's got Tom Waits in it, so -1 for me.
From round about the same period (my college days) how about The Element of Crime, come on, bet no one else has seen that?
Delicatessen - Classic film noir way before Amilie had the ironic last laugh!
CountZero - MemberDiva! Bingo, someone else has heard of it.
Me too, have it on VHS & DVD one of those films that just stays with you IMO
Well Muriel's Wedding was a delightful film in a colourful, black humour sort of way.
dont you mean mariel ;o) very funny movie
Did Primer have much publicity?
some more to add to the lovefilm list ๐
Dark City - Saw it on TCM a few nights. Amazing visuals.
Delicatessen
Eraserhead
Tin Drum
I liked Gattaca the first time I saw it but it lays it on a bit thick with the downside of genetic tailoring.
D0NK sed:
Quite liked Nigh****ch (no not the one you think) not got round to seeing daywatch yet
+1 and do try and see Daywatch (was on Film4 a few months ago) - it continues Anton's story with his son, Yegor, and explores the whole Light One / Dark One universe a lot further. The effects are a lot better too - without ruining the grimy feel of the film.
Lebanon
Haunting stuff.
I'd say Dark City was overshadowed by the Matrix because it's really clunky compared to the Matrix.
Kiefer Sutherland is awful in it, in fact none are the performances are very good!
Inland Empire is a stunning film. It's David Lynch, so probably not right to say it was under the radar, but I get the impression Lynch is less appreciated these days than in his prime. Think he struggled to get it funded from what I recall.
I always liked the french film 'city of lost children'
Bizzarely, I think I was watching that as you posted. Agreed, a very interesting film. I think "The world according to Garp" is a film that I'd like to watch again and is quite unsung.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Timecrimes
Primer
Was just about to post with Primer and Timecrimes; two very good films.
Some others:
Session 9.
Fear me not.
Into the wild.
Grosse Point Blank.
Interstate 60.
Sole Survivor - Shatner at his best
Paris, Texas
Ghost in the Shell - my personal fave
22 bullets, french subtitled
Girl with the dragon tattoo, what the original before Hollywood ruins it.
Aussie file "The Castle"
The Dish
Repo Man
District 13 for some great parkour
The Beast
City of God, athough not sure how 'below the radar' it is
+1 on Payback, one of my all time bestest films
Amores Perros
Y Tu Mama Tambien
An old film but Killing Zoe starts off slow but gets better also an oldie The Beast Of War about a T-62 tank crew in Afghanistan.
+1 for Repoman
+1 The Tin Drum
Look out for "My Life as a Dog". Good low key film to make you smile.
*admires phatstanley from afar... in a strictly manly way*
awwwww, thanks.
jim jarmusch is well good, enjoyed night on earth, too.
how about dead man with j.depp and the neil young instrumental soundtrack and the awesome campfire scene with iggy pop in drag?
A few oldies:
The Conversation
The Offence
Southern Comfort
And a slightly more modern one:
A Simple Plan
How about "grosse point blank" got some reasonable publicity when realised, but not one of the big hitters, and has now kind of slipped into obscurity, certainly not one of the many cult films listed above which actually have quite large followings.
Its kind of like well made pop music, its entertainment made to put a smile on your face, but just done so much better than most films with the same objective.
But it's got Minnie Driver in it, who is awful.
Crime spree. funniest french crime caper with the cream of french actors in it, i picked it up from a video store cos it had Depardieu in it and watched it twice in a row.
tetsuo the iron man.great film and sountrack (i bet trent reznor watched it ๐
I watched Micmacs the other week. French, weird and hugely funny.
I don't know anyone else who has watched it, or even heard of it.
