got some ffp3 ones on the way too,

Why do you feel the need for an FFP3 mask?

My understanding is that most diy masks that are FFP3 have on outlet valve. The point of the mask is to reduce moisture /spit from your out breath so they are ineffective as masks for use in shops.

Ironically the homemade ones or funky planetx type ones are better.

Ebygomm I think wins on the funky design and recycling top prizes in one go.

Here this might be useful none of these are homemade out of a bit of cloth, a homemade one can’t be classed as FFP3

The decathlon scuba masks were genuinely adapted as ventilator masks in Italy in the early stages

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/coronavirus-ventilators-snorkelling-masks-brescia-italy-engineers-a9420916.html

and can be adapted to PPE if you have a 3d printer, apprently

As others have said having a vent valve that opens when you exhale is pretty pointless from the purpose of protecting others as it tends to give a good focused jet of clagg from you.

I have been working with various forms of respiratory protection for the last 34 years and this is not to protect you its others, how effective many masks I see people wear will be but its better than nothing.
I think this sums it up quite well

Can buffs be used as facemasks when using public transport or shopping?

I have been, we have several so it gets chucked straight in the wash when I get home.

Apparently folding in half and putting a tissue or coffee filter paper in between the layers in front of your nose/mouth makes them pretty effective.

Tbf they are only ffp3 as they haven't made the ffp2 filters yet.
Will be converting them once available.
until then will be using the 2 layer fabric ones with a filter from vistaprint.

Got these when the first lot were released. Not bad for 3 and washable.

Sizing isn’t great though.
The l/xl are large at best, probably more med/large tbh and the s/xs are probably more medium. Certainly too big for my 7yo and only just fit my 11yo. Fine for my 16yo though.

Some work by one of our labs based on CO2 thermal imaging (note these are protype makes for a bigger piece of work) shows the importance of different mask shapes. Note the one without a mask is breathing through nose only and due to lack of resistance there isn’t the same concentration in one place to image.

At the risk of crossing over with the Depp thread, I'm going for a bandana or 2. (Yes I know they won't be very effective, but neither is a face nappy).

Shyface was the first on a Google search. I'll update if they are any good.

If going the buff / bandana route Cleveland Mountain Rescue are selling their version at a very reasonable £6.50 including postage to help fill their current funding gap with no country fairs etc. happening. Go on you know you really want a landrover in your face mask 🙂

This is the guy that organises the Lincoln GP road race. He owns a clothing company and as soon as Covid became a thing, repurposed a whole load of production towards masks. He made a load free of charge for care homes in Lincoln.

I’ve got a bunch of Buffs and generic neck/face tube warmers that I wear all the time for work, plus a rather striking one with the AntiFa flag logo on the front!
Gonna make drinking a coffee when I’m in town doing my little bit of Saturday shopping, though...

CountZero - Where did you get the antifa one?

Also, a buff is a bit thin to be really affective but they do fit well across the face and make a good scarf when not in use. Does anyone make a triple fabric version??

Just followed first link and ordered a couple of Victory Chimp masks. Hoping wife likes the Celeste colour, she might be less enamoured with having 'Victory Chimp' written on her cheek...

Same applies for their other kit, loved the look of their Ogham cap but not sure I want to be going around with 'Victory Chimp' written across my forehead...

I can sell you a box of a special triple layer version, it's exactly the same buff material just a third of the length of a standard buff. Unfortunately due to high demand it costs 10x as much.....

You can fold a buff / neck tube into a triple layer to use as a face mask, as you can a pirate hat, bandana etc. They are generally quite long, probably more than 3 times now and mouth length.

Might not be an ideal for your planned Tesco shop but as a thing to have in your pocket for the unplanned shop stop on a ride / walk / etc. they're great. Also works for the usual uses of scarf, sunhat, warm hat, bandana.

I bet planetx don't do a 5p offer on them again anytime soon!

If you make your own, make sure they have a lining and pocket for filter (we've been using kitchen paper).
The masks need to be 3 layers thick and fit correctly. If you have to fiddle with it once in place, then it's no use.

I wear a mask almost every day at work and I find it impossible not to have to re adjust it within 20 minutes?

I've read that if you make your own then it's not PPE it's for the protection of others and compliance with rules - so if you fiddle with it then it is still as useful as it was.

Victory chimps FTW, although this was before compulsory surgical mask wearing in the lab so will now wear the VC ones for shops

@roger_mellie
I've been using bandanas as masks for a couple of months. With a bit of practice you can tie it in a way that keeps a filter in place.

Mine has a pocket for a filter but in all honesty I've only made it to comply with the face covering rules for shopping and on a ferry journey. It doesn't need to be 'effective'.

The cotton mask and the buff I've tried are both unusable with glasses due to steaming up. Any tips

My PX mask arrived today. Suitably hideous, with a pock for a filter and they fit fine too.
Quite looking forward to venturing out in one now.

I'm likely to spend 2 or 3 hours per day in a mask every day for the foreseeable future with commuting to work and shops etc. Having something that's an interesting design and fits well for that length of time is well worth £5 for me.

@footflaps.

With that type of mask, you are breathing filtered air in, but exhaling through an unfiltered open valve moisture, virus spores etc, etc, so not in the spirit of helping those around you.

I got the Snugpak ones but they're very warm. Probably okay outside but in shops it's hot.

Can anyone recommend a washable one that isn't expensive and isn't too warm?
