McLaren disappointed to only be 3rd and 4th on the grid. Those upgrades seem to be delivering.

How long before Ricciardo is back in the Red Bull?

The Race has put up an article on the fender test, including some illustrations of what they looked like..

https://the-race.com/formula-1/first-look-at-prototype-f1-car-spray-guards-after-initial-test/

Thanks, aside from not reducing spray very well, i wonder how badly it affected the aero.

Really pleased for Lewis, shame about George.

Mclaren looking to have made a definite step forward.

Also enjoying Lewis planting a few seeds about Red Bull seemingly getting slower suggesting to journalists they "should look into it", inferring shenanigans behind the scenes.

Wow! A Mercedes on pole. Didn't think I'd see that this season! So exciting!

McLaren up there as well. Hopefully this is more of an indication of what the rest of the season will be like, as it was looking to be a bit of a Red Bull dominant snooze fest

Can't see Max staying behind for long. Once the DRS is on, he'll be away. Hoping for a nice race behind him.

It's a great qualifying result, but I suspect it was a case of Red Bull just having a bad day and Merc and McLaren having a good day at a track that doesn't punish their cars' weaknesses. I'm sure they have made a step forward, but I think Red Bull are still miles ahead when they get their car setup properly.

Edit: I think part of the result is that DRS isn't as effective at this circuit as at others. Hopefully that will make it harder for MV to just cruise past. Gonna make it harder for Russell to move up through the pack though.

Also, Norris has a set of new medium tyres, whereas LH and MV only have used mediums. That should help a bit.

Terrible start for Hamilton! What a shame. Oh well, I wonder if Piastri can trouble Verstappen at all!

33 seconds! So dominant. Very reminiscent of 2011 and 2013, when Vettel used to sail off into the sunset from lights to flag. Roll on next year, I guess?

Hamilton saying red bull are slowing

Slowing their rate of acceleration away from the rest perhaps?

He was talking about RB's 'trick' DRS wasn't he? (so it wouldn't have affected Max much in the race given he was leading, but would have cost him pace in quali).

Damn, Ferrari desperately need to sort out who's actually in charge and stop messing about.

5 place grid penalty for Max on Sunday, so he'll be leading by the end of the first lap then.

Hard to believe that Ferrari, Renault, Williams, and McLaren won every championship from 1979 to 2009. Now they're all in disarray and looking like BAR and Jaguar did before they got put under new management.

Anything to do with this weeks Beyond the Grid podcast where Szafnauer criticized Lauren Rossi calling the team out a few races ago?

I actually don't know what Renault get out of F1 - their participation has seemed half-arsed even when they were just an engine supplier to Red Bull. Red Bull won titles despite them not because of them.

Just never quite good enough.

Yeah, its always been like that even back to the Williams glory years.

I wouldnt be surprised if Renault pull the plug and this ends up becoming the Andretti team?

Renault do F1 on a shoe string budget and expect to compete with the big guns, they always have done. It just seems like they are in F1 as it's easier to remain in it than to sell the team as they did before and have to take it back as it was about to go bankrupt. Also closing down the engine plant in France would not be well received so its basically the lesser of two evils.

Wonder if this has come from pressure from the new investors or Renault/alpine.

what's briatore up to these days? 🤔😅

Harsh penalty that mind, not like he came in hot from miles back. They were side by side FFS!

They were side by side FFS!

Perez gave Lewis racing room, but then Lewis runs wide and causes a collision with damage. 100% a penalty

Yup

If that had been Verstappen you would be wanting him hung!  Hamilton looks like he opens the steering before the collision as well

Rubbing is racing?

I think it was a fairly small error by Hamilton, and if the contact had been wheel to wheel he may have got away with it as a racing incident. But the way F1 works these days it's not surprising that an error leading to damage to another car ends up as a penalty. IMO the issue is still that the rules leave it open to debate, and we get apparent inconstency in the stewards decisions.

Having watched the video, that to me was a racing incident, especially as F1 is trying to encourage racing. However as it's Red Bull v Mercedes, racing incidents don't exist.

Steward's are ruining the sport.

I thought that apart from Max (as ever) the rest of the race was pretty good - loads of high quality overtakes! Albon was on fire!
