Was he coming back from a work event at No 10?

Boris says he wasn’t aware Bernie was there.

Typical modern attitude......I can do whatever I want and always deny/lie my way out of it.
He should have taken up politics - he would have fitted right in.

Danny Ric is going to be looking for a new job next year at this rate. Beaten by a poorly team mate last week and put it into the wall today.

Yep. It's a weird paradox that he seems so anxious and dependent on his own confidence considering how light-hearted he is (seems?) out of the car. He'll be a great loss to the sport if that happens.

Yeah seems like a nice guy and has produced some great racing moves in the past. Will be a shame to see him go but he’s really not been performing well for some time now.

Who do we think might replace Danny Ric if he does leave?

And do you think any other team would take him?

I saw a photo of this years cars compared with cars of the 60’s and a couple of years ago, wow they are huge, how they will fit around Monaco is going to be interesting, usually this Gp is won in qualifying. Always great to them going through the tunnel and past the swimming pool.

Looking at that phot the track is also a lot narrower due to, you know, something to stop the cars going either into a solid stone face or, you know, the harbour...

Well yes there was more than one car in the harbour back in those days. The first Monaco GP I recall seeing on the telly featured Lorenzo Bandini's horrific fatal accident when he hit a wall. There are certain aspects of F1 from those days I don't miss.

There's a lot of noise around Ricciardo and McLaren right now re their three year contract. It's a shame to see someone of the calibre of Ricciardo potentially being being let go, but would Pato O'Ward be a shoe-in for the seat or would McLaren opt for another ambitious hotshoe like Gasly?

Re Bandini - the whole unnecessary additional tragedy in the aftermath of his accident sums up all that was morally reprehensible about the sport at that point. There's accounts of teams interpreting the rules to extremes - one year the rules stipulated a wall between the engine and the cockpit, but the text was very vague. The intention was to mandate a firewall between the engine and driver, so most F1 teams of the day did just that and fabricated heavy steel plates. One team turned up with a piece of cardboard cut to fit and that was sufficient to satisfy the interpretation of the rules.

Regarding the cardboard firewall, I remember hearing stories of pro-roadies using undersized helmets with the inside dremeled out to save weight. It's the same in any competitive endeavour, people are so driven to win that they will seize any advantage regardless of the risk.

@pjm1974 I think Pat O'Ward was confirmed this week for Arrow Mclaren Sp Indycar for the next couple of years. That is either a good thing for DR or a bad thing if there is a clause that allows Pat O'Ward to transfer to F1

Karen is really pushing this budget cap drama!… 🤣🤣🤣

https://www.racefans.net/2022/05/28/solve-budget-cap-row-or-risk-championship-being-decided-in-appeal-court-horner/

And Pat O’Ward - not sure about him yet. They seem more set on Colton Herta.

And a sensible approach - the cap was intended to level teams up, not be flexible so we’ll funded teams can stretch it when it doesn’t suit them…

I despise Horner, he's a stain on F1. If that were to happen with Max benefiting it'd be the second time RB rely on legal intepretations superceded by a twinge fest to win a championship.

Do we think this will be the last time F1 is at Monaco?…

https://the-race.com/formula-1/could-this-really-be-f1s-last-monaco-grand-prix/

There seems to be lots of power-play politics going on behind the scenes at the minute. Even one article I read suggesting Liberty are looking to break away from the FIA! FIA wanting more money, Liberty questioning their value to the sport.

Yep. It would be great to just have it a faux-historical race with replica 25 year old Ferraris and McLarens or something driven by ex-F1 stars fighting for a prize that goes to charity, but it's a joke as a real race.

There’s a chainbear youtube video which looks at some options to improve Monaco - some sensible some crazy. Worth watching to see that there are options to make it better.

Agree, the Monaco festival of speed of similar. It’s a toss up for me whether to watch the GP with a few beers this afternoon or mow the lawn, the choice likely dictated by the fact that mowing the lawn slightly pissed is more fun than otherwise.

One team turned up with a piece of cardboard cut to fit and that was sufficient to satisfy the interpretation of the rules.

That was Lotus under Chapman, using paper sprayed in aluminium paint - I don't THINK it passed, but it gives you an indication of where his priorities lay. He was an outlier in that respect, or just more imaginative, maybe. Crazy times, but attitudes were different then - it hadn't been that long before that many involved in the sport were involved in WW2. Lots of inertia against safety moves - Ascari's Monaco harbour plunge was seen as a strong argument against mandating safety belts, but the horror of Bandini's crash at the same place was at least a driver in setting limits to race duration.

Monaco have bottled it. They see an almighty pile up leading to no contract renewal and are trying to mitigate.

I'd be very sad if Monaco left the calendar. I know it's a procession but I love all the history and nostalgia

My reckoning - they'll do a dozen laps behind the SC, then abandon the race.

Edit. Not even a dozen laps.

Alternative now is that Monaco gets a rolling start, a race that lasts 30 minutes and thousands of disappointed punters.

What are we waiting for exactly? Either these cars can cope with this, or we all go home.

Pathetic

A procession behind the safety car like we saw at Spa last year would be a disaster for Monaco's prospects for hosting future Grand Prix.

As opposed to a procession behind a Ferrari when the rain stops ;-). I’d make the race on 20” bicycle wheels to help with overtaking!

A new F1 farce.
I can see why Liberty are falling out of love with the FIA.

Do Monaco actually want the GP? Is it that they /the FIA want it but Liberty Media aren't quite as keen on the idea based on it being little more than a procession or is it that they're trying to get out of hosting it and Liberty Media want them to stay?

Ten minute signal is happening.

FWIW I'm really not a fan of the current generation of massively long, bloated F1 cars, especially at a circuit like Monaco.
