Hi all,

I've done the 3rd party hire car excess cover before, and the one time anything happened (break in) it worked very well. However, that company doesn't cover hire vans - so I need some experiences / recommendations?

It's for a van hire abroad (switzerland) - don't just want to choose the first one off google!

Cheers!

It's difficult (if not impossible) to get van excess insurance in the UK that will cover a Swiss hire van.  I couldn't find any so gave up.  Swiss van hire is also extortionate.

Something to do with them not being full members of the EU I think.

I have a standalone policy I take out, it seems to cover *any* excess on a vehicle. I will need to re-read to check.

To be honest, i found a place that would do it without any difficulty so assumed there was loads of choice - however, now i've looked into other suppliers, it seems that most places say EEA only. And switzerland isn't in the EEA.

The place that can do it is:  https://www.questor-insurance.co.uk/van-minibus-hire-insurance.aspx

Anyone ever used them? Bit worried they only cover the excess up to 2500 quid.

Tho having had a look at the hire quote i've got for the van, the included insurance has an excess of 3000chf which is £2280, so assuming questor are reputable, it should be ok...

Ah scratch that - questors van hire must start and end in the UK. Bugger. No one does it, guess i'm paying through the news then!

I guess if you're hiring in (and only driving in) Switzerland you need to be looking at Swiss based insurers rather than getting a UK insurer to cover you abroad
