New as in new with packaging as well?
measure 'shortest' (height wise) point in load area (often at tail gate but sometimes not, ime), ask shop to measure shortest side of packing and assuming the load area is fairly flat you should be ok?
don't know if it's still the same now we're off cfc's but tipping a fridge/freezer on its side used to be a bad idea

Its only a bad idea if you then switch it on straight away.
As to Q, surely it completely depends on the particular fridge/freezer and the amount of packaging the manufacturer puts round it ??!?
Got the packaging dimensions. Will measure up first. After all I aint driving round with my boot open or the steering wheel pressed into my chest!
You can fit a fridge in the back of a '04 Fiat Panda. No really, they're big enough inside to take a standard sized 60cm appliance, in packaging too, if you put the seats down. I was amazed.
So a decent-sized estate should be fine. I'd recommend measuring first if possible, though.

Why not? We do it all the time. I carry a bungee specifically for this purpose.
PP - Knowing my luck I'll end up with the thing sliding out at speed (there are a few large roundabouts on the way home)
Dont drive like a ****t then?
You can get a washing machine in a Smart four two.
I once bought a load of furniture at Ikea when I'd arrived in my VW Polo MkII with three other people. We had to remove the sunroof and put the bookcases in the back seat sticking out of the sunroof. To make it fit, the passenger seat had to be all the way forward and my rotund and normally dignified housemate ended up with his face about three inches from the windscreen and his arms on the dash. It was bloody funny, still makes me laugh thinking about it ๐
....and leave it to stand for 12 hours before plugging in to let the gasses settle..
gf's had a fridge freezer in the back of a micra... unless it's a silly estate with a very narrow or shallow opening then surely it'll go in?!

Won't ever happen. You can't accelerate hard enough to make it slip out the back. Believe me, you can't. It will move foreward when you brake, and maybe slide side to side if you drive like a tool, but it won't move backwards ๐
