A few recent threads on here inspire me to ask...

Have you ever managed to change someone's opinion about any significant issue - religion, politics, environmentalism etc – whether on STW or in the 'real' world?

Has anyone ever changed your mind?

Or are you happy to confess to the group that you're basically a stubborn-minded argumental warrior? And, if so, what's the attraction?

Me, I can't even persuade Mrs 16 that Diana wasn't done in by the Windsors driving Fiat Unos...

Only the person who's mind it is can change it. It's always a choice, even if it might not feel like it.

Yes suprisingly - the big debate about cycling on the cairngorm plateau softened my stance considerably

I have also learnt stuff in debates on here

Yep. I actually admitted I was wrong in a thread once (yes, just the once). Almost a banning offence!

DezB - dare I ask what the issue was?

Yes and yes.

Being open to the insight of others is critical if you want the full life experience rather than a one dimensional egocentric existence.

Happy to change and be changed.

Have been right and wrong about many things. Whether people agree with me or not is up to them

Er, can't remember.. something really important and vital like a Highway Code issue, probably.

I've only ever been wrong about something once. It was when I thought I was wrong about something, and it turned out I wasn't.

I change peoples minds all the time, they just don't know it.

Okay, but how about the biggies? Here are some issues that, as far as I can tell, make opinions intractable:

God or no-God?
Left wing or right wing?
Dave Cameron, * or * ?
Conspiracies, yes or no?
Dannii or Kylie?

Anyone changed someone's mind about one of the above?

Is it really possible to change someone's opinion?

Not really had my mind changed as such, because i start with an open mind, and being equivocal about topics. So, no change of mind as such but often manage to gain an understanding of another view point.

s it really possible to change someone's opinion?

that depends on how well formed the opinion is and how open minded the person is..

I've certainly had my view changed by threads on STW.. but then I am a fickle little so and so with no immediately discernible moral fibre..

God or no-God?

Yes. My religious beliefs have changed completely during the course of my life.

It's a choice. Me, I'm a Dannii man, but I suppose with enough debating I might be convinced to go Kylie.

By a conversation, debate or argument, mintimperial? Or by self-realisation?

Yes, but would it be the kind of debate which involved lots of people?

At the moment, CM, it'd probably just be one or two. 😉

Like Charlie, often have my understanding of others' positions increased by threads here.

While I often don't join in on the political debates, I often learn stuff from the well researched posts (and nothing from the no so well researched 🙂 )

You see Camo, the Dannii/kylie thing I would have had down as the one thing you couldn't change your stance on. Its hardwired into your DNA from birth I think

Oh... Dannii too BTW. 😉

That's a beaut..!!

I think I'd like that as my epitaph when the time comes.. 🙂

(definitely Dannii.. Kylie is too shiny.. if the inside of her mind matches her exterior I would die of boredom)

No, he hasn't quite straightened me out yet. I did get a drink from him though. 🙂

I'm flabbergasted.

Ever since this, it's all been about Kylie

Conversations and debates, and also reading a lot of relevant literature. All major changes of that sort are inevitably going to involve self-realisation too, though, ultimately that's the only way change is going to happen.

I occasionally admit I'm wrong. But sometimes I'm just lying to keep the missus quiet.

Is there a link missing? Was it the Agent Provocateur one?

I managed to convince a hard-core biker at my first job that what he really wanted was an MG Midget. He came over to my parents' place out in the sticks to show it off, then put it into a field on the way back to his after not making a corner.

He'd only had it a week.

It can be very difficult, a lot of people tend to formulate an opinion and then look for evidence to support their conclusion. There has been lots of research on confirmation bias and how people will overlook evidence that contradicts their opinions. I've not bothered to look for the evidence not supporting this phenomenon though 🙂
