Just use one of the big boys, but get 3rd party excess insurance.
Where in Italy? The north will be fine- Sicily and the south may pose more problems.
depends i guess if your pottering around a city or driving all over italy.
if just pottering about i'd just get something small and economical with aircon or a convertable like you say, i dont like convertibles though so cant help you

I've always been alright going through holidayautos.co.uk or similar. They are all the same anyway IMHO.
I hired a convertible on my one moon - it was so f'ing hot that we never used it!
