Theiving ****s

Got robbed a few years ago, minor scratch, when I returned it the bloke behind the counter said it was so minor that none of the deposit would be taken, they took £500. Customer services was shit, hid behind a load of lies. Had to get the Hire car Firms regulators onto them, eventually got over half of it back.

Someone I know attended a car on the A303 near Stonehenge. The driver, an American, had hired it at Heathrow and, being unused to real gearboxes, had driven there in second. It was well ablaze.

Budget trie to charge me for a new windscreen last year which was interesting as the chip had been noted when I picked it up. They took$700 for it which I got back eventually. Same mob charged me $800 for a rear quarter light which was smashed in a break in. Sadly auto glass ccd me in on the invoice for $189.90 so I went bonkers at the markup and after 3 weeks of fighting I got it all back. Fallout was our company stopped usingbthem as our car prOvider so was almost 75k per annum they lost.
On the other side Peugot Euroleasevsimply shrugged when we handed back our lease car last summer. It had been hit and shunted into a wall. Lots of duct tape fixed it but they didnt care at all and happily took it back with no penalty or issues at all.

Europcar tried to charge me for an additional driver, even though I has booked my wife on the car at the same time as me.

Found out yesterday that they were repaying the cost! I got money back!!!
The guy I spoke to on the phone was very helpful and seemed to understand my point that I wouldn't go on holiday for a week with my wife and kids and NOT have her down as a driver...

So I was very pissed off that they took the money, but amazed that they gave it back without much effort...there is hope! 🙂

Being a Peugeot, they were probably surpised it was still moving at all at the end of the lease agreement!

Worst I've had is Budget not give me my fuel deposit back for a couple of weeks. Took a bit of snotty emailing, but not too much faff.

On the other side, I once returned a car to Geneva airport with a dirty great dint in the front wing where a French farmer had drivven into it and they didn't bat an eyelid. Never heard a thing about it.

Europcar take a £250 deposit off, not very clear on the website.
Furthermore if you pay by debit card, it takes about a week to get the money back from them, quicker return if its a visa credit card allegedly.
Enterprise are the same but only take a £150 deposit, which is clear on the website but again you have to wait for nearly a week to get the money back.

I don't know why you're surprised at Europcar ripping you off - they have to find some way to pay for TV's drugs.

in the manner of a rally car and with the 'you can do whatever the hell you like to a hire car' attitude

I guess this sums up why they are like that. Anyway, this is what God made camera phones for. Very much a plus one for photographing damage at pick up and the condition on hand back. Resolves these sort of disputes really quickly.

Haha, I do some part time work for National Europcar and would NEVER hire a car from them due to there deposite rules etc, I always hire from Dollar rent car when hiring in the USA, no big deposite (in fact no deposite) bring the car back empty, have been fantastic, in fact last time I had a couple of little issues about the car I had for a month on hire and I have a nice discount sitting ready for when I hire again in October.

I have hired from enterprise about 150 times. Mostly for carrying bikes in small hatchbacks. Never charged for muddy marks in the boot, minor interior marks, tiny scratches. Burst a tyre once and was charged only the price of the tyre. Left a parcel shelf somewhere and couldn't return it until the next weekend, no problem. A great company to deal with in my experience. I always used the same branch so quickly built up a relationship with them and rarely got a Daewoo/chevrolet or similar awful car. Usually got something much bigger and nicer. I have my own van now so don't hire anymore.

Lost a wheeltrim from a Thrifty car, on returning it the guy suggested the garage down the road sold them for £25 and perhaps i'd like to keep the car for another hour.

Europcar sound bobbins.

I've been pretty lucky with with car hire companies. Enterprise were kind enough to waive the 500 quid excess when their car (432 miles on the clock) got written off.

The only minor quibble was the breakdown service is rubbish, apparently "on the southbound carriageway just before junction 23 of the A14" isn't a good enough description. Muppet kept wanting a street name and asking if I could see any shops/businesses. Luckily the police decided it was too much faff and they'd recover it instead.

Car hire in Portugal is an experience. They're such maniac drivers I don't think anything's undamaged at the end of the season.

We got reversed into by a big Land Cruiser 4x4 with a towbar on in a carpark, which then just drove off. We phoned the hire co and they were only interested in whether the car still drove. the fact the rear door wouldn't open was immaterial. When we took it back they just shrugged, and basically said they got all the cars together at the end of the year, swapped bits over to get as many decent ones as they could and then scrapped the rest.

Got a Budget/Avis rental car the other day. Handed me the scrap of paper with all the scratches marked on it, and the usual thing of being told to check before driving away. Those scratches were all so insignificantly minor that none were visible without scrutiny and wiping the rain water off! The one marked for the wing mirror wiped off - think the guy on the car wash just slacking!
So do they employ forensic analysts now to find scratches so small that you wouldn't see them on a normal "good look around the car"?

Just had 2 amounts of 25 euros deducted from my credit card by said europcar, for two alledged traffic infringments 3 minutes apart from when I hired a car in May. Been driving over there for 20 or 30 years without any issues whatsoever, nothing untoward occured to the best of my knowledge. Any thoughts or experience of 25 euro traffic fines in France? It doesn't really make sense to me.

Only used europcar once without issue. The car was spanking new and me and two mates took it on a weeks camping and biking in Wales. The thing was "lived in" to say the least. I returned it in that state and said I would pay for the valet. Bloke who signed for the motor said not to worry as it will be cleaned before the next customer hires it. The thing was a mess inside and never heard a dickybird since.

To bring a little balance here,

I've spent approx £6k of my employers money hiring cars from Europcar over the last three years. Never had any problems whatsoever. Also worth noting that of the £6k about half has been spent with the Europcar branch in Aldergrove airport. The nicest smiliest most helpful hire car people I've come across.

ps I never fill the fuel tank up, and I usually return the cars filthy. Never had an issue or been ripped off for fuel.

G

Anyone?? £22 doesn't seem like the amount of a fine to me, I have checked and fixed penalty speeding tickets are much higher so absolutely no idea what this might be for and there nothing to tell you on the Europcar invoice either.

I usually use Economy Car Rentals as the excess is covered automatically and they are usually pretty competitive.
