We've decided against a £2 Astra Estate and are going to spend £800 or so on a T-reg diesel Volvo instead.

I had a Fiesta Supersport (W reg), which handled like nothing on earth -I don't know what mods it may have had, but it was a 1.3 version of the 1.6 XR2, but waaaaaay cooler and better looking - it kept up with the XR2 anyway. With a little bit of damp on the road it'd wheelspin in the first 3 gears.
