a police helicopter has been scouring areas of south-west London overnight.
Surely this is just urinating into the wind of the heli rotors?
He described Mr Khalife as resourceful, adding he had learned "basic survival skills" in the Army - including how to keep clean, find water and read maps.
Love the media. We teach that to everybody for ****s sake.
We also teach scouts and guides it.
And those chimps wondered why we gave them so much shit on tour. 😂

That's a very particular set of skills...
Kid's only young though so he's not had a very long career to acquire them.
😉

Wow, such extensive training 🤣 You'd be hard pressed to find anybody without those skills 🤣
Watch out Rambo, we have a new kid in town 🤣
Interesting update that he’s been spotted with a change of outfit -black baseball cap and T-shirt and ‘dark coloured clothes on his legs’
has he raided Edie Bouvier Beale‘a wardrobe?
Half heard an interview on radio 4 need last night, he was described as "not knowing his arse from his elbow but he's quick at the hundred metres so he might be hard to catch." I'm pretty sure it was the news and not the quiz show after!
Chiswick eh? I'd have thought ex signals would have found somewhere colder greyer and wetter to spend their time.
He didn't get very far at all.
He did the hard bit extremely well but didn't seem to have a clue after that.
There's nothing the bleeps can get right. Such a disappointment.

I'm offended...
From the guardian:
The justice secretary, Alex Chalk, said that he will leave “no stone unturned” in the investigation
No point looking under stones. Maybe time to start looking under vans?

BREAKING NEWS!
Met Police have forgotten the word for trousers.
On a bike, but caught only a handful of miles away from where he started after a few days of effort. I wonder if he posts on here?
BBC reporting that he's been caught. Grabbed whilst cycling on a tow path. Bloody cyclists, escaping from prison and going on the run!
Grabbed whilst cycling on a tow path.
Yeah but was he wearing a helmet?!
pulled off bike whilst on a tow path.
He's probably glad it was a plain clothes officer given how that sentence normally ends.
Yeah but was he wearing a helmet?!
I don't think plain clothes officers wear those. Be a bit of a giveaway really.
I hope they charge him with bike theft too.
Straight out of Hunted - Towpath, bike.
just read he was pulled off on a towpath.
No mention of Lionel Blair though
What is it about this guy? I think the Prison Service lost about 12 detainees out of custody last year. Their loss perhaps made local news certainly not national news.
how many do they lose that close to mediaville in London though? Big local news story in London is national news!
Add a terror link (irrelevant if he’s a real terrorist or spy or just a wannabe and now we definitely have a good story. Once the media are on it like that the home office and the cops need to make a big deal. These things become self perpetuating too - a clickable headline like “terror suspect escapes” will get traffic and therefore becomes a big story - it’s no longer about what the editor thinks we want, it’s about the drivel that people actually want.
escaping from a prison isn’t actually the hard bit (he’s proven that) it’s getting to and surviving somewhere once you are out, with no money, no contacts/network, no phone, and your face in the media. I’d bet half of all prison escapees end up going to friends/family. If you are a hardened criminal they might help/hide you. If you are a 21 yr old ex squaddie you aren’t going to have many options and if he is an Iranian spy he is unlikely to be helped by them as it would disclose their network.
he doesn’t necessarily need to be leaking the utmost secure details - there’s political value in being seen to make an example of him to deter others. Similarly showing that escaped prisoners “even with military training” get caught is a deterrent to stop others who might be tempted in times when prisons are poorly resourced etc.

perhaps he’s been watching Happy Valley
😜
Well it’s pretty clear that he isn’t an Iranian spy, given I imagine they’d probably have made at least some effort to lend him a hand after he’d done a runner..maybe they provided him with a bike so he could make his way over the border to freedom
given I imagine they’d probably have made at least some effort to lend him a hand after he’d done a runner.
Probably into the canal
He had quality provisions though. Arrested with a Waitrose shopping bag of food…
@tpbiker - or he is, but this was all an elaborate double bluff so they can tell the jury “clearly not working for a rogue state”.
personally I doubt Tehran has much interest in helping “junior” spy’s who get caught. People spying for Tehran are probably not incentivised by the possibility that if you get caught you’ll get smuggled out to Iran and live a life of luxury in the extreme religious dictatorship…
Even if they did want to help him, given it took half the met 4 days to find him, I’m not sure how a couple of Iranian spy’s were supposed to find him, unless you believe it was all a carefully planned and orchestrated activity! If it was I don’t think we need to fear Iranian espionage!
the bbc headline is amazing this morning: Daniel Kahlife remains in custody after arrest.
IF there IS a government spin doctor pumping this story up I think it’s probably to give the impression that he is a clever spy with specialist training who managed to escape and that the public needn’t worry because murders, burglars and rapists are all quite secure. I’m sure that if you want to escape from a British prison it’s not impossible.

And some real spies have been arrested!
A No 10 spokesperson said: "The prime minister met Premier Li Qiang and conveyed his significant concerns about Chinese interference the UK's parliamentary democracy."

That made me laugh when i first saw it. Are they having a daily count to see how long he lasts this time?

That's what happens if you hole up in Chiswick. Needs must, and Whole Foods in Richmond would be too risky what with them focusing on the park there

Khalife vs Truss vs a lettuce anyone?
Arrested with a Waitrose shopping bag of food…
Clearly got a taste for quinoa and artisanal sourdough in the prison kitchens at Wandsworth.
He has pled not guilty to the escape.
Hopefully they will report his explanation of how he ended up outside.
He clearly slipped and fell under the lorry, got caught in some straps and was removed against his will. Could happen to anyone.
Who runs the prison he "escaped" from? It wouldn't come as a shock to me if serco or g4s released him by mistake and then made up a tale of a daring escape to cover up their incompetence.
Perhaps he is pleading not guilty of escaping from lawful custody because he is challenging the legality of his detention?
Unless he wants further publicity for his cause, whatever it might be, or he has been advised that there was a technical issue with his detention, it does seem a bit pointless.
Oh god, please be a Freeman of the Land defence with a good sprinkling of Magna Carta!
IIUC / as I recall it; lawyers / barristers have to advise their clients on the legalities and strength (or otherwise) of their defence but no matter what the lawyer's opinion, if the client insists they are not guilty is obliged to represent them as best they can.
This one's stretching that to the limit, isn't it?

Unless there's a chance of a much reduced sentence then what's the point of pleading guilty? May as well have a day out in court, an bit of infamy, and the slim chance of getting off on a technicality.
Chances are that it’s just half the story for the sake of a headline. He’s probably pleading not guilty to “escape” but admitting “absconding “ or something.
