I see the official bid has been launched today. Obviously as a footy fan, I'd be glad to see football come home again. Wondering what the reaction to the news will be like in the wider public.

given this country's record of overspending by mind boggling amounts on such events; I'd say we'd be better off paying off some of Mr Browns borrowing with the money

I'm not sure that Euro 96 was anything other than a cultural/ economic success. So, a chance to make bucket loads of cash from minimum expeniture should be passed by so we can cut off our noses to spite our faces and all have a further dig at Brown ?

The world cup's a sporting institution, but the football's fairly shite these days. Sub-standard to the domestic game we have in England, and not something I can really be arsed with watching. Still, the world cup coming to England (is it England and not the UK?) makes sense, and would be a positive, celebratory event for the country I think.

I like watching all football, mind, but the endless analysis and chin-strokery of England's performances is really tiresome. Combined with the pedestrian football on offer it's not my cup of tea.
