It's a long time since our fans thought we might win the world cup at the next time of asking though.

For a non football fan that was pretty good to watch, England marginally better but Scotland had some good play. Really good to see a lack of drama on the pitch, just the right amount of commitment without the silliness. If England are supposed to be so much better it didn't really show tonight.

Commentary on ITV (esp in the studio) was very partisan, worse than Inverdale in the rugby.

Putting wearers of picnic blankets firmly in their place is infinitely more gratifying. 😉 and to be fair realistic...

It was an exciting game for a friendly!

It will be interesting to hear the armchair pundits analysis of the game tomorrow in the office 🙄

That's becasue the league is full of foreign jonnies, as most actual English player are a bit, well, pants. Just marginally less pants than the rest of the home nations.

I am in the same boat.

Both you and I know there will be zero talk about the result tomorrow.

Has this finally convinced people that English footballers are overpaid classless untalented louts which compared to the rest of our sporting peeps are way down the league table of popular people?

So you'd put the commitment and ability of any English footballer above that of dalaglio, wiggins, Ennis, farah, hoy, Froome, Thompson, Coe Murray etc ?*

*yes, English Spanglish or whatever....

You're just boasting because your overpaid classless untalented louts are better than our not-quite-so-overpaid classless untalented louts.

No. I would recognise them as elite athletes in the same way the ones you mention are.

Why the need to denigrate one group, in order to elevate another?

Jamie hold on - I'm not. I despise football. I genuinly thought England lost ( am in a hotel with free red wine and olives in my room so am a tad pissed) from a Facebook message I recieved.

My comment stands and your reply re elite athetes I agree with. Nothing against Scotland at all. Fwiw I believe top rank footballers and there monies / attitudes are despicable in reflection of the achievement of such other lesser "paid" athletes I have mentioned which was the basis of my comment.

That's a pretty poor attitude you have there Kryton57. Some footballers have poor attitudes. Some do not. All of them earn what the game they play dictates. This does not make them despicable people.

Cav earns £2.4m a year salary. Wiggins is on £1.5m, Froome will probably make around £3m in the next year.

Football isnt the only sport that pays successful people a lot of money.

I'm sure Mo is doing just fine now that he takes the shilling from Branson. I wonder if the fire sale of Northern Rock, financed by the taxpayer, and about to make one shitload of money for him helps his advertising budget. I wonder if Mo cares.

Kryton - why are any of the players from tonight's games 'louts'? Or did I not read The Sun for the last 12 months?

No, but it's one of the few that pays unsuccessful people a lot of money.

Scotland played well got the tactics right .Still managed to give away two silly goals, we can expect to tighten up our defence. England played ok but also gave away silly goals.Aside from Wilshire and Walcott no one really got a grip of the game. England will play better with match practice. Does that count as talking about the game.?

I genuinely enjoyed that game. 😀

Nice to have a bit of an edge to a friendly, great to see Scotland put in a decent, heartfelt performance and good to see some emerging talent.

The result was immaterial (but only because we won) - the manner in which the game was played was almost as important.

Good result for Norn Ireland too.

Ah, gordhimor, not really

The folk I was talking about are the 'glory hunter' brave heart wannabes who won't actually say a word/care about the beautiful game, and are more interested in the bragging rights as a way of forgetting about the chip on their shoulder. You know, the ones who define themselves by their 'hatred' of the neighbour, rather than anything positive about themselves.

You sound like you enjoyed the game for the games sake 😉

You know it's not nice to talk about the English that way.

I think it's because one of them deliberately broke another players arm last year, and was then selected for his first cap. Oh no wait, that was Rugby 🙄

Back to the game, found it thoroughly enjoyable and hope it's back on the fixture list soon. Haven't read the news this morning but hope that both sets of fans behaved.

Rooney looked pretty good, Gerrard didn't, we appear to have a problem at centre back. Ukraine and Poland will give us some serious problems. Scotland surely need to apply that passion to their qualifying games.

Enjoyed the game last night despite the result, not the best game ever but both teams had go. 3 goals showing skill/opportunisim and 2 from mistakes. Still annoyed that the Tartan Army boo the English Anthem though.

The fans booed each others anthems. Not that I think it's necessary or desirable to do so.

@ Scotroutes, it seems the TA make more of deal of it though, I wish they could understand that indifference is a bigger insult.

I was more impressed with Gordon's post match interview than Woy's, he just seemed more engaged than the England manager.

As it was the first footy match I've watched in aged and really enjoyed, I was disappointed to hear on the radio this morning that, due to fixture congestion, it's unlikely to be anything other than a rare event.

Surely football could benefit from a home nations championship.

I listened to the anthems on the radio and it seemed like the booing was just as bad for both. The English fans could have set the tone by not booing.
