Hey, does anyone have any idea what these huge conductors are made from? I've taken the photo and have to explain what's going on! Well whats going on depends entirely on what they're made from! If anyones wondering they are on the Manchester University campus, near Picadilly.
Thanks!
iirc -The chocolate coloured stacks will be insulators - probably ceramic or special glass.
Ceramic insulators them things.
The chocolate coloured stacks
Haha I'll remember that! Hmm,I thought I read conductors on the plaque, more thn happy to doubt myself though!
Porcelain or ceramic.
Those (post) insulators will be porcelain however they are also made of glass and composites and come in various sizes and shapes depending on the application
Thanks guys! You've saved my word count
Theyre walnut whips for the giant who lives at the top of the Bean stalk on Piccadilly.
Indeed, they are composite INSULATORS (not conductors!) which are (mostly)made of Porcelain and they are used to increase the creepage distance between a high tension (high voltage) conductor and the (grounded) supporting structure. There shape means there is no short, easy, straight path between the two potentials which helps prevent flashover
Porcelain insulators poss from old Grid Transformer or Switch
