If my rudimentary understanding of arithmetic is accurate, it'll be 18 inches in.
My late step-dad cut through the hedge trimmer lead, and bodged it with a screw block and a load of sticky tape. I bought some new lead and replaced the whole lot, and started doing it myself, looping the cable over my shoulder to keep it out of the way. Still managed to cut the cable while trimming the hedge...
The extension lead has a built-in RCD, thankfully.
As above, if he has made it to 80 he must be doing something right. He is probably a bit frustrated about not being able to do as much as he used to so I'd fix it for him and give him a hand cutting the hedge.
It will probably make the old boys day to be out doing man stuff with somebody to chat to.
I did that once while borrowing my neighbours hedge trimmer, I repaired it and returned it, was never sure if he noticed it was 8 inches shorter afterwards. Never used a hedge trimmer again since and lived to see today!
I reckon you should repair it for him, but only partially so that it catches light next time he uses it and he has to replace it with a battery version!

Reducing the size of the trimmer itself by 8 inches, that's definitely going the extra mile.
It was in the early 90’s and we’d been out clubbing the night before, she’d decided to cut the lawn
Without wishing to be facetious, does the context imply she was still mashed on disco biscuits and short on sleep when the accident happened?
