[Closed] EDL Coming to Aylesbury on Saturday - What can we expect?

[#1560305]

The 'English Defence League' is coming to Aylesbury town on Saturday for a static protest.

The council have started boarding everything up, Thames Valley Police have apparently drafted in an addition 600+ officers from the MET police in full riot gear (sounds like they are ready to crack some heads), the shopping centres are closing and most of the roads around the town centre will be closed as well.

So, what can we expect to happen? What is the EDL's previous like in these situations?

Surely if they're static, it makes it far easier to hit them. Doesn't seem very sporting.

When I saw the title I thought - "EDF coming to Aylesbury?, I'm pretty sure they've already got electricity"

Expect to see plenty of thugs turning up looking for a fight - the police
Expect to see plenty of thugs turning up looking for a fight - the counter demo.
Expect to see plenty of thugs turn up looking for a fight - the edl.

What will happen? - a few handbags, then everyone of them will trot off back to their mundane, unfulfilled, empty, boring lives.

Its going to rain, so if like STWers, only half will turn up 😆

They've boarded up the fountains in Kingsbury Square, but why totally defeats me?

And I wonder how many will turn up at the train station looking for a taxi - as you can guess who 'provides' the majority of these...

If you've ever been in the vicinity of a crowd of football fans you'll be hard pushed to tell the difference. They're largely the same people.

Amuse yourself by trying to work out what the hell the lefty groups causes are. Also fun to play spot the undercover copper.

Does Aylesbury have a big muslim population? If they turn out that'd make things more interesting.

Oh yes, even a Muslim mayor for a while recently.

Jamie, your ambiguous smiley has left me wondering if you agree, disagree or are saddened by my assertion that EDL are mainly footy thugs who see it as a handy outlet for their activities.

Genuinely interested.

The EDL that is, supporting Luton, not the muslims. Although they might. God knows. 🙂

Based on what happened in Dudley recently, the Police will close down the entire town and you will not be able to go anywhere near the centre. There will be various "scuffles" but nothing overly nasty unless another party (be that the Police or the Muslim's or anyone else) get involved. If that does happen then i would suggest you keep well out of the way.

Not nice whatever happens, the EDL are truly a nasty bunch.

I can only see 2 possible reasons for that comment.

1) You're deliberately trying to be offensive
2) You're massively ignorant.

Please advise.

I wouldn't have a problem with the EDL if they were anti-religion, that is all religions.

Who's organising the counter-demo?

you will be hard pushed to tell the difference to a crowd of football fans, mostly because since the violent side of football supporting is being squashed effectively by the clubs and the old bill, the fighters need to do something else on a saturday.

i predict handbags and not much else, the only guys in attendance with the courage to really kick off will have riot sheilds.

Did Aylesbury not one a "most boring town in the country" award a few years ago? You should probably be pleased anyone's coming.

trailmonkey - read that link. Police observation of EDL activity to date shows close links to football based groups. Many of the organisers are the same. They certainly project a similar image i.e a group of predominantly white males with crew cuts chanting in a tribal fashion.

I think what you're saying is that football fans aren't all thugs, and I'd agree. But to the lay person the groups look the same.

So you might not like it but I'm not ignorant. And I'm not sure whether I'm meant to be offending the football fans or the EDL.
