A strange request for the sizable Edinburgh-based knowledge on here. I'm going to be in Edinburgh quite a bit over the summer and was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere for a swim when the weather is so stupidly hot like the past couple of days?
I've heard Threipmuir and a couple of the other reservoirs have seen a bit of action with local triathletes (but think the local anglers might not take a shine to it), and went and checked the near mythical ash lagoon of musselburgh the other day, but there must be some other options (the Forth doesn't appeal really). The canal and water of Leith have some nice looking bits, but I don't fancy getting some rat-borne infestation. So any ideas of where to swim, ideally somewhere on the edge of the Pentlands or closer into town? Lochs, rivers, reservoirs, I'm not fussy, just need somewhere to cool off.
The local triathletes do the occasional training session at Threipmuir but they have a boat out with them and are kitted out with the appropriate suits. The WoL is actually pretty clean in its upper reaches, so I doubt you'd be much at risk.
commonwealth pool? its only a suggestion ๐ฏ
Aye, that's what I heard druidh, but I'm not looking for a long training session, just a wee splash. I think turning up on your own is likely to annoy the lovely fishermen.
roundwheels- Commie Pool is ok for swimming, but hardly [as the title says] open water
Edinburgh RC Triathletes run a weekly open water session at Portobello:

Cheers for that kcr, Portobello beach might be worth a try, though it takes a while to get down and back. Not 100% convinced on the water cleanliness either. I'm still sure there must be somewhere closer to the city.
it is open to anyone ๐
Not deep enough druidh. Wouldn't want to terrorise the MSPs (or frighten off the tourists) either. ๐
Anyway, am off for a ride now, might check out Threipmuir if I end up round that way as there shouldn't be many folk around.
There were folk swimming in it earlier when I was up (about 7pm), but they didn't look like the tri type at all.
commonwealth pool is shut for two years
Well, Threipmuir after 10pm is pretty quiet, so had a quick splash on the way back into town. Kept up at the top end away from the outlets and it was a bit shallow in places. Probably better going earlier with a little more time to explore. Looks promising though. Thanks for advice all.
