Anyone had experience with a free dynamic dns. You know the one that takes your non static ip and allows you to use a host name instead.
Any recommendations? Is it all hassle?
I setup a couple of wireless CH thermostats which could be used through the interweb.
I looked at dyn.com and no-ip.com
The no-ip.com was much easier to setup - I didn't get the dyn.com one working.
However, some telcos e.g. SKY ship firmware on their routers which work with dyn.com, so you'd be better checking that out before proceeding.
http://portforward.com/ is good for sorting out the port forwarding at the router end.
I use the dynDNS service on a couple of servers I have published and it all seems to work okay.
Took some setting up but soon got there!
dyndns, no-ip, etc etc all work fine.
I use a combination of dyndns and no-ip to host my own DNS server and serve my own website from a TLD.
I have used both, both are pretty easy but I prefer no-ip. Geoffj- what thermostats did you use as I would like to do the same.

I use dyndns, didn't have any issues setting it up and it works great. My router does have Dynamic DNS functionality built in though.
dyndns here for my VPN endpoint and an IP webcam to look after the dogs.
Not had any issues, but then the router does state support for dyndns specifically and will ping it to keep the DNS allocation live.
As far as I can see DynDns service is not free. cheapest is $30.
DynDNS is free for a single endpoint. You can pay for the "pro" service, but if you just want to have a single endpoint, register and then drop back to the free version after 27 days.
