I've got the yellow red and white cables coming out the back of the cheapo DVD player I've bought, but only two sockets on the back of the TV. How do I connect it?

It doesn't appear as if your TV has a composite video input. Is that all the DVD player's got? If the TV has a SCART you can get a cheap converter.

What do the two sockets on the TV look like? Are they coloured? Any other connectivity? SCART? HDMI?

Also, christ, how old is the TV?

Red and White will be audio and the yellow video. How you've managed to by a DVD player that only has composite is beyond me; I'm amazed that they are still available. Really need to see the back of both the TV and the DVD player.

With a scart adapter. (As long as your tv is old enough to have a scart input) Look in the loft - if your anything like most of us there will be a bag of them from 10 years ago when they were actually used.

the TV has HDMI. The DVD player does not. No scart adapter.

Then honestly, the best advice I can give you is to take it back and buy one that's slightly less cheapo. Even it you get it working, it's going to look like a VHS video.
