I can't imagine this will ever be paid though.  Like in the Jones and Giuliani cases it seems the very rich can just tie it up in court forever while they continue to spend as normal.

Apparently he has to hand over the cash to the court in order to appeal. The court already has the first $5m sitting in the bank. Yes, he can try to drag the appeals out for years, but I doubt that he can count that money as an asset on his financial records. That will make it harder for him to take out loans and I guess he'll pay higher interest. His net worth doesn't seem to be the billions that he claims so losing access to $85m is probably a much bigger blow than it seems at first glance.

Nice.  Reading about it a bit more it also seems the award was so high in order to stop him making further similar claims as he doesn't normally stop when told to.  Got to like that really

Trump always says he'll fight and fight and appeal, but in reality; he almost never does; according to one study I saw back when he was president. Trump either wins or settles, but he never says "I lost, fair cop"

Well, he hires pretty smart lawyers so they'll surely tell him to shut up in the future I guess he's ****ed.

I read somewhere that much of her bluster up there about being stripped of right to appeal is because when various bits of evidence were being entered in court, she had 'No objection' to it, and consequently the evidence is accepted as true. Even suggested she was saying it without understanding what she was saying because she'd seen it on films! but surely not even the dumbest law school graduate is that dumb.

Now they want to go back and contest it which is a basic law 1.01 failing. There is a possibility to do that in a criminal case apparently if the judge rules that the lawyer is incompetent and hence a fair trial is denied, but that isn't the situation in a civil case.

So her main objection to the denied right to appeal seems to rest on a complex legalese argument proving how bad she is at her job? That's Catch 22 lawyering, right there.

Given Trumps record of not paying his lawyers, not listening to their instructions and constantly lying no decent lawyer will touch him nowadays.  IN the UK a barrister pretty much has to take a case as it done on a queuing basis IIRC.  In the US this principle does not exist.

Again IIRC he has had great difficulty in getting lawyers even to represent him in some of these cases as no suitably qualified person would represent

I do love a bit of schadenfreude

Hubbas incompetence started waaaay before the trial even started!

They missed deadlines on their expert whitenesses, objecting to the prosecution expert whitness, waited 3 years to assert presidential immunity so missed that too.

Then at trial, she didn’t know how to address the judge, didn’t know how to introduce documents into evidence, didn’t know how to raise an objection. Tried to retry the case, despite Trump was already found liable. Her behaviour was so bad, she came close to being locked up 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

US news clips last night suggested he has $400m-ish of cash he can draw on. 20% of that is now ring-fenced and the other cases will require around $350m of cash when he loses. Anyone want to go halves on a gaudy hotel somewhere in US?

Radio 4 reporting this morning that the begging letters for cash fundraising activities have already gone out.

He’s doing his whole thing about this being a plot by the ‘Deep State’ to undermine him and Billy Bob who lives in his trailer, eating squirrels in shitsville, Idaho is apparently responding by sending him money.

In a way you sort of have to admire the bare-faced front of it

I have mentioned this chap before https://www.youtube.com/@briantylercohen

I am a bit distrustful of the slightly too tight sharp suits and his glee at Trumps downfall but he seems to make good analysis. His sidekick who is a lawyer as well stated that to appeal Trump needs to put up a cash bond - but not necessarily the full amount

Seems the only appeal possible in this second case is about the amount, Not the fact that he libelled her.

The absurdity of that - if it is the strategy - is... theres no need for Taylor Swift to endorse anyone, if she ever would have done, for her to be of any influence. By attacking her the signal to Taylor Swift fans (of which there are rather a lot I presume) is the Republican Party is not your party.

I do have to admire their faith in the CIA. It would be a seriously impressive operation not just in terms of planning needed but the sheer imagination of it.
I hope they are only paying her gov wages as well since would help cover their costs with her wealth.

She's everything they desire - a rich, beautiful, talented white woman - but she's not racist and doesn't hate 'the gays', and the only way they can process the cognitive dissonance is to invent ludicrous conspiracies about her.

Or maybe they're terrified she'll mobilise her legion of fans to vote Democrat.

Shouldn't have long to wait for the verdict to be handed down in the NY civil fraud case as the judge said he wanted to reach a decision by 31st January.
Will the 'disgorgement' be anywhere near the $370 million the AG wants?
What about...the other charges being considered, the possible life time ban on trump doing business in NY, the dissolution of his NY registered businesses?
The month could end on a real high!

Who knows...

It will be interesting... I imagine it will be incredibly punitive as the justice system will want to send a very clear message.

Oh, Jesus Christ. The MAGA nuts are so ridiculous that it's easy to think of them as a joke and forget that they have given permission to some very dangerous people to unleash their insane fantasies.

I think once you’ve got to ‘decapitating your dad on youtube’ levels of crazy any olde cause will do

I worked in Social Housing for 2 years. One Tenant was particularly horrible, neighbours complained etc, as usual the Management wouldnt do anything. It went on for a few months. We were called there to make the place safe, not told any more, but the Police were there, and we were to liaise with them. The place was being cleaned when we got there, but there was clearly something wrong, as a large cover was on the living room floor. All we did was confirm the electric was off, and we turned the water off, and got out, no-one said what had happened. It turned out he’d killed his Grandad in the bungalow, firstly knocking him over, jumping on him until he ws dead, then trying to cut his head off. The bloke next door had it on his Ring camera, he’d killed his grandad, then went to his car to get the saw. The Police arrived as he was using the saw. The Court case brought out what a nutter this bloke was, and he should have been locked up years ago, as he was clearly mentally unstable with a violent streak. Oh, also, he got 7 years extra (iirc) for killing the cat, and nailing it to the wall. News report linked below:

Yes, but the MAGA nuttery gives people permission to act out their fantasies. This woman ran for a congressional seat in Florida as a Republican.

No, nothing to report.
Judge Engoron said he '...wanted to reach a decision by 31st January'.

Think of the decision as a snowball rolling down the mountain - getting bigger and faster...

donny knows he's going to be crushed - somewhere; it's just wait and see for the when and where.

Could we develop some sort of MAGA misfortune totaliser and work out which countries GDP is equivalent to Alex Jones, Mike Lindel, Guilianii, Fox, Trmp et al’s fines and legal fees

heard a bit about the stalled enquiry into Trump  and  emoluments. He was very quick to declare he’d put his business interests into trust while he was was pres. as presidents can’t receive income from foreign businesses. Then… very quick to quietly alter the term of the trust so that he was allowed to help himself to cash.

only a small percentage of the paperwork was handed over before the GOP managed to halt the enquiry but it revealed $8m of income from foreign government backed businesses - most of that from China, some of that from the Chinese embassy in Washington

so… there’ll be another court case

Lord Owen suggesting Farage should be American Ambassador because he’s got influence with Trump.

Interestingly - I've heard quite a few American commentators picking up on Trump rambling about 'Debanking',warning his crowds that 'they' will debank them for their political beliefs, at his rallies and just finding it amusing nonsense as they've no idea what the term relates to and just presume its one of his brain-farts. It does give give UK listeners and good sense of who has Trump's ear though.

Not quite sure what would convince a lawyer that working as Trump's defence is good for their ongoing career. . . .

Is there a simple list anywhere showing each of Trumps legal cases and the status of each (lost, appealing, ongoing, civil, criminal etc.).  It would be great to see his loss rate, considering he is such a winner.

But I'd love to see it interpreted as a Littlewoods pools coupon

The latest election campaign finance reports show that trump spent $50 million of campaign funds - not his own, personal money - on legal fees.
$1 million a week to lose court cases - or fail to win or fail to delay them.
That is impressive!
This excludes bills being paid direct by the RNC.
It's clear that his base will never understand or accept that he's rinsing them and has absolutely no interest in them other than using them to achieve his objectives.
Other than his family - and even that is debatable - everyone is disposable, fully expendable.
Billy Bob & Cindy Lou will never see him for who and what he really is.

tj - from everything I've read, yes, it's legal; donations are to a political action committee (PAC) or super PAC and they control disbursements.
There is a lot of information online but it's turgid to trawl through it.
As for his missus, she has been largely invisible since he left the White House; also, her mother died recently.
I would be very surprised if she wasn't focussed on securing her future and that of her son; updating the pre-nup etc.
