Well, as it turns out the plastic rod thing that sits in our fridge drain hole, which I’ve twiddled, poked and cleaned every so often to stop the drain blocking doesn’t actually go all the way down the drain hole to the external tray. This explains why the bottom of the drain hole was blocked with what can only be described as a proper smegfest, it also explains why we came back from a long weekend to find the fridge was multi tasking and providing both cooling and indoor swimming pool facilities.
What did you use to clean that far down? My old fridge came with a swimming pool and ice wall!
The missus has a range of v small bottle brushes on fairly soft wire core (eBay or Amazon) the one about 1cm wide (edge to edge of bristles with about a 2/3mmwire centre) was pushed and encouraged all the way through.
If the fridge door won't easily open immediately after closing, it's a sign the drain hole is blocked as it also works as a pressure equaliser between inside and outside the fridge. Without it, the air trapped inside after you close the door, cools and is less dense, so you get a pressure difference which holds the door closed a bit, making it hard to open.
I use a camel back cleaning brush thing to clean ours out when it blocked.
Yeah, i have to take the back out of mine to get to the drain hole.
Had to do it 3 or 4 times in the dozen or so years i've owned it, though it gets completely defrosted at the same time.
So not really a bad thing...

Bleach, lots and lots of bleach. As well as poky things to get in there; old spokes are good for this and many other things.
A very long plastic cable-tie works for drain hole clearing :o)

I'm slightly disturbed that people are using the same tool to clean out a Camelback hose that they are to drag out the assorted smegma, effluvient and farage out of a fridge drain.

Random thought: can you still get pipe cleaners? They were a craft thing when I was a kid, I don't think I've seen them (or anyone smoking a pipe that wasn't for harder drugs) in years.
