This little champ is 9½ weeks old now, we've had him a week.
Never known so much laughter and joy from my kids nor, having previously shared a house with Europe's most misanthropic cat, such unquestioning love from an animal. The only question I have is why did I wait so long?

I prefer the cold cynicism and aloof independence of cats. It makes my cat's desire to sit on my chest purring loudly at 2am more meaningful.

Are they though? On their own maybe. We've had an iffy week with dogs. A neopolitan mastiff pulled itself free from its owner to have a pop at my dog on Tuesday. On Wednesday I was riding and was bitten by a std poodle that also pulled free of its owner. The owners companion then threatened to knock me out if I kicked the dog again. To top the week off, I'd mopped our floors and our mutt strolled in from the garden with wet, muddy paws and not a care in the world for the footprints he left behind.
There are people who do not like dogs. Unfortunately they are impossible to avoid. They are everywhere.
Definitely great our border is a year now, we’ve had almost a year too. Such great company helps me keep a level head.

Dogs are ace, right up until they eat vile things, then shit on the kitchen dug 5 minutes before I have finished a training session, then do it again just as we are leaving to collect my GF from the station, then whine about wanting to go out at: 0130, 0321, 0500.

So yes, dogs are freaking amazing and we are lucky they exist and chose us to charge their awesomeness.
Got 2 absolute arsehole dugs and love them to bits. Both rescues so have their weird wee ways. Best decision we ever made was to give them a home.
But yea. Other people's dogs can get on my wick so am very aware they are not for everyone. We do walk them at odd times and remote places so they get the runs they need without annoying other people.

I have manflu. Lola hasn't left the bed.
She has eaten the occasional turd or Saturday morning pavement pizza but never rolled in anything gross. Never done anything but solid turds in the year we have had her.
I love everyday my my curly tailed mongrel.

Fox red lab? Here's ours, Hettie, 2 years old and only occasionally a dick.
Sometimes, they are, sometimes they are not.
I've never loved and been as frustrated by something at the same time.
Yesterday, in an open dog field, met a new dog, all ok, happy in company of other dog. Then our friends dog comes in, happy go lucky lab, never had a problem with another dog. Nothing obviously changes, my dog jumps on the previously unknown new dog. She was muzzled as she can be a little unpredictable and has previously eaten 2 tennis balls, so no harm done, but the poor thing didn't deserve it at all. Cue owner and dog leaving field rapidly with the impression that out dog is a dick (she's not always but she really can be).
Every other dog we met on the walk was absolutely fine.
She eats poo (not dog but every other variety), rolls in poo, has no recall, is unpredictable around other dogs and occasionally people, guards her house fiercely, isn't fussed about affection unless she wants a belly rub for a bit, so won't snuggle up in any way. She's long term ill so can't be vaccinated, so we can't travel with her, hard to put in any kind of residential kennels or holiday place.
Overall it's been a real rollercoaster, cost me a fortune, nearly broken up our marriage and yet still she's here and we both love her way more than we should. I'm still uncertain I'd ever get a dog again.
If you still think that 9.5 weeks old you're doing well with the puppy phase, a lot of people are regretting the decision already!
I’m a fellow member of the young fox red Labrador club.
She was a heartbreak dog, our greyhound had passed away and even though I said to the wife “at least 6 months” before we thought of getting another dog, we’d signed up for Peggy after 6 weeks.
Whilst she can be a total bum hole at times, she is also sweet, gentle, loving and a whole load of fun.
Yes I miss my lovely lab. 13 years together and a life full of adventures. Treasure every moment.

Oh dear posting those pics has set me off.
I've watched dogs save lives on operations in Iraq & Afghanistan and then seen them save lives back home as therapy dogs.
For those reasons alone they will always trump all other animals for me.

Congrats on your new addition! I’ve been around dogs (specifically GSP’s) my entire life. They’ve brought so much joy and happiness (and sadly the greatest sorrow too) and really make our house feel like home. Just about to take the younger of my current pair out for his first hill run which will be a nice wee milestone for him! They’re a huge responsibility and I know they can be polarising pets (especially post lockdown it seems) but I wouldn’t be without them. Well, when the pup goes off chasing the cat at 4am I’m not so sure…
We rehomed Esther at 14 months over 3 years ago - she was just too hyper for her previous owners. She took to running with me instantly and I try getting out a couple of times per week. Apart from her sometimes boisterous energy, she’s also pretty good at catching and dispatching little furry and feathery things and has a ‘kill’ record I’ve not shared with Mrs DB. Fortunately she’s fine with our chickens and has a healthy distrust of the deer outside - one who will give any dog a good kicking if they get too close.
Some excellent dogs up there. As in all of them.
Yes, he's a Red Fox Lab and I can't wait to be out on the local trails with him. Although on current showing he sleeps about 20hrs a day so might be a spin round the park and that's that.

What a lovely topic even if a bit sad for a few. Nearly 6 months ago we lost Maddie. Still really fudging difficult. She passed away exactly 15 years since we got her as a pup.

Willow. Nearly 2 year old Collie. Ace and frustrating in equal measure! Lovely, affectionate dog, and with a ball/stick is pretty ace, but her recall is shite, especially if she sees a squirrel/fox, she's just got tunnel vision and is totally focused on that. Getting pretty fed up of having my arm yanked out of its socket 🙄

Had our new little addition a week now and she’s settled right in. The boys have taken her under their wing. Blooming glad she’s had her last injection and can go on the floor, walking around with her in a rucksack last week for socialisation was killing my back 😂

We're raising the not so little Herbert - a gorgeous german shepherd.
He's going to break our hearts when he goes for the next stage of training in 3 months or so but hopefully he'll make the grade and give a blind person their independence.
Guide dogs have been amazing to work with and we will raise another puppy for them (if they want us to)

get a bungee lead or lead extender.
Lola is 22kg and loves a flat out sprint if she gets to the end of the long lead you're going face first into the mud.

@hardtailonly I'd recommend a nice long 10m line with the end clipped on to yourself, better for your body to be yanked than your arm/socket, mine used to be clipped on to a bumbag. I'd also buy a copy of 'total recall' and give it a read as it'll help you teach a new recall command as the last one has been broken and you need a new one.
Well, we've had Murphy almost 2 years, since he was 8 weeks old. I wasn't for getting a dog, but was over ruled. I struggled with him for about a year, but now after almost 2 he's a great dog. Typical spaniel, no much recall, bags of energy, gets too muddy and rolls in the occasional turd, but he's a great wee dog and very sweet and affectionate. Can definitely be a dick, and it has required quite a lifestyle adjustment.
He doesn't often sit still long enough for a photo....
