I love my wife. We have a fabulous relationship. But I could happily divorce her every November and get married again in January.

It's not that I hate Xmas but there's a limit to how much excess I can put up with. Too much food. Too many presents. New decorations every year (but we'll never need any the following year). And on it goes. Having said that, she's working 24-27th this year so I'm trying to do what I can to make it special around her shifts

I should also add that nobody ever admits to their tight-fistedness being the reason they hate Christmas.

Happy Christmas everyone!

No wonder you don't like it if you do that. 😛

Hate the early build up and play up to the scrooge role with the kids, but... with three kids getting giddy as we speak, first bottle of black sheep on its way down, just knowing the kids are going to be so excited in the morning and will love their presents makes me one happy person come Christmas day.

Even making a special effort with the Mother-in-Law this year - wife lost her dad in October so extra effort to make new traditions with the smaller family. Looking forward to a few beers with my old man tomorrow whilst doing dinner.

Merry Christmas all! Hope everyone has a good one!

S

That's the thing though you don't have to do any of that to enjoy a few days off work and a few extra beers because you don't have to go to work.
You can say no to all the bullshite and still enjoy yourself.

its a randommly chosen day of the year,...... , the inevitably rubbish weather..
It's not random though, it is entirely linked to the later - whatever the origins festivals in the long dark days when the weather is poor make a lot of sense. The weather would still be shit even if you cancel Christmas.

I'm not religious so personally don't bother with it but feel I have to go along with it all.
I hate all the commercialisation, annoying adverts that even I struggle to avoid. The amount of presents seem ridiculous especially as people know what they are getting. Not even all that keen on traditional Xmas food. Rode past the local curry house tonight wishing for that. 🙂
I do enjoy seeing family and friends more and the excuse for more bike riding/walks though.

I do rather enjoy it. I get some time off, spend it with friends and family, do my own thing.

I'm not into the over commercialisation of it and I don't like it rammed down down my throat from November, but I ignore all that and like I say, I quite enjoy it.

I had a few very few tough ones as a kid and I hated it as a single adult, few found memories but as a Dad I love it.

This...
I dislike it when I have to venture into town shopping and I dislike the constant ads for boxing day sales as if shopping was some sort of hobby but getting to see my son open his presents and spending time with the family ( not the inlaws though) is great

This will be the 4th/5th Christmas as a single feller, I find it pretty grim tbh, I never look forward to it.

All my mates are doing the kids thing or with their families so I'm pretty much left to myself for the day, I'll catch a few of them on Boxing day and see them for a ride during next week.

I'll get up, have a bacon sandwich, go for a long ride, get back and drink a nice bottle of red I picked up in France while watching the tour in the Summer, sit around and think about some of the cool stuff I did through the year, listen to some records I've not got around to yet, phone my mum and step dad, see how there getting on.

It goes by but get's a bit grim and lonely if you stop and think to much, always feels like I'm under a microscope or something, and a bit of a wasted opportunity, I miss someone being around to spoil a bit, but that's how it is for now...

I don't hate Christmas - there's some parts of it I quite like. But it goes on too long and I really don't like all the excess, the social pressure to have excess, and the expectation that you'll be incapable of doing anything after dinner as you've eaten too much. "nobody diets at Christmas" - well given for a change I'm in the right mental state I don't see why I can't go out and work up a sweat on Christmas day, and then not overeat.

What I dislike most is things stopping for the holidays - I quite like just having a normal week where I get out of the house and do fun activities with other people a few times, but it's all stopped next week and instead I have to make polite conversation whilst sitting in the house not doing anything.

Love hate here. Not that bothered by it but with a 4 year old the sheer excitement is infectious ! Don't go nuts on presents, loads of little things probably 40 quids worth. She likes the boxes !
Nice dinner but nothing crazy.
I lived overseas for 16 years and it was the only time I really missed family, we will see them all tomorrow and share a glass of bubbles but it's what you make it. Had a few lonely ones as well, anyone alone in edinburgh feel free to pm me and come round, I have beer !

yep............it comes round too often. perhaps I would enjoy it if it were like the Olympics... .every 4 years !

No kids of our own so it has usually been a drive to visit the aged parents, but this year the last one passed away.......hopefully get some sort of ride or walk in then settle down for a dirty great Lasagne and garlic bread followed by some guitar practice.

Family, good food, excuse to drink too much and a hilarious 14 month old niece who already has a sense of humour and likes to join in with the toast and say "cheers". Spent most of our money on nice food and booze for everyone to enjoy, instead of presents - because it's about the experience not presents isn't it?

So it's good fun this year, the only good thing about winter, things will be a little bit meh again up until April or May.

I only despise Xmas when I end up working it, or some of it. This is the 1st time in 13 years of prison service that I've been of for Xmas AND NY.

So I'm loving it. 😆

Well I love Christmas, atheist but so what it's a festival, I've been skint so I've only spent what I had, I've had to work Christmas day, great shift. My father died a couple of days before Christmas a few years ago, but I still celebrated because he loved Christmas and that's what he would have wanted. In fact I'm looking at a bottle of his favourite whisky right now so I think I'll pour a treble and raise a toast to him 😀

Merry Christmas everyone 😀

Thanks Tom, it's a 5 hour drive, I do think about popping back some years but usually I'll be OK on the day, I always give them a long skype call in the afternoon and spend the time I'd be sat in the car each way with my mates on the bike.

Some aspects of it irritate me, mostly the commercial.

Folk treating the various TV adverts like they are some form of culture FFS.

But I get to see family and buying presents is fun. I think I'd struggle on my own.

If you really understood being a misanthrope you'd know that it's not hard at all...You're right, it is shit though, but alas, i'm only a human.

Must be difficult being a bunch of pushy Christmas ****ers. 😉

Great post princejohn - given the last part of my post and that all that is what seems to keep me from sinking I thought I might need something like that - but thankfully I seem to be doing OK so far. Helped by having a good chat yesterday with some folks I've known for a long time but haven't really exchanged more than a few words with in years.

Usually manage to either A: get a shift at work that pays 4x normal rate or B: spend at least half a day ignoring all the crap that's forced upon me by my family 😀

Planning tomorrow morning's ride right now actually

* have a habit of ending up single around this time of year!!

Thinking about it for a minute so many cultures have had annual winter festivals, blowouts basically, that perhaps we need Christmas at some level.

I've not read all of this thread, however this is incorrect

I never understand the hatred of christmas, it is at least at the very basic level some time off work

This time of year as a supermarket trucker we get hammered, forced to do shift changes & overtime that we don't want to do (I'm sure it's the same for anyone else working in this sector)
Personally, I like catching up with friends at this time of year,I just wish I had more opportunity to 'socialise'...

As for the people who hate christmas being the people who dont like spending money . Are you ****ing serious ? What about the millions of people living on minimum wage or benefits? Do you think they enjoy xmas ? Can you imagine being a single parent of 2 or 3 kids knowing alot of their peers will be getting tablets or mobiles, when all you can afford is a T shirt or trainers as they are essential year round presnts
Or try being the poor husband who is on £20k a year and his misses spends the entire months take home on frivolous xmas landfill tat , and he just has to accept it , take out another credit card to pay for it all as she does not understand 'we cant afford it'
Bet that guy loves xmas .

Nothing to do with being 'poor'. Plenty of 'rich' people can't stand to spend money on anything Christmas related. And, the amount you spend isn't necessarily proportional to how much you will enjoy Christmas (obviously).

I'm pretty sure *some* 'poor' people manage to enjoy Christmas

See, I can sympathise with this:

As for the people who hate christmas being the people who dont like spending money . Are you **** serious ? What about the millions of people living on minimum wage or benefits? Do you think they enjoy xmas ? Can you imagine being a single parent of 2 or 3 kids knowing alot of their peers will be getting tablets or mobiles, when all you can afford is a T shirt or trainers as they are essential year round presnts

But not this:

Or try being the poor husband who is on £20k a year and his misses spends the entire months take home on frivolous xmas landfill tat , and he just has to accept it , take out another credit card to pay for it all as she does not understand 'we cant afford it'
Bet that guy loves xmas .

To those described above, grow a spine. Cut up the card and cut off the flow.

I'm enjoying christmas immeasurably more since concurrently having a kid and ditching live TV. Not seen an ad in years. Bliss. Looking forward to getting both sides over (again) for probably more arguments when my mother makes an inappropriate comment or my sister in law takes something the wrong way. At least I'm not working this year, some other twunt can keep the lights on...

But for all those who are dreading it, I hope you find someone to talk to that understands or have a great day away from it.
