Just after Christmas I slipped on some ice while carrying my son and landed on my arse on the edge of a stone step, since then my lower back has been quite painful. Last night the boy was pretty unsettled and leaning over the cot didn't do my back any good and while trying to get out of bed at one point something twinged and really really hurt.
I'm tempted to book an appointment to see my GP, but would I be wasting both of our time? Are they likely to be able to do anything more than tell me to rest it (which I'm trying/struggling to do) and take a painkiller/anti-inflammatory? Thanks
Your GP is the gateway to the physio treatment you need, that is what they are there for. You'll only be in there for a few minutes, don't worry about it!
No. go .
Just get an appointment. Sounds like you could have done some damage. You pay your NI (in part) to have access to a GP.
A friend thought he twisted his ankle on ice, when it didn't get any better several days later he visited his GP who refered him for an Xray at the Hospital, which resulted in a spiral fracture being diagnosed - go visit your GP to a the best get the all clear.
Your GP would think you were mad if you didn't go.
Go but be prepared for the GP to be about 21, and to go through a tick list on the computer: Is the patient breathing? Is the patient alive? Is the patient blue around the lips?
By all means try the doctor, but in my experience, a couple of visits to a chiropractor would be better.
Unless you need painkillers or a sick note, I'd be tempted to go straight to a physio. It will cost you money but will save 6 weeks of pain waiting for an appointment that will be the day after it all stops hurting anyway.
You want to see a physio, referral from a doctor is one way to get it. Don't accept a referral for "physio over the phone". Yes, it is a real thing, I have experienced it, it's useless. If all that leads nowhere, go direct, 30-40 quid a session.
Don't go to a chiropractor, chiropractic is nonsense.

Not sure I totally agree with you. IME physios tend to be really good with soft tissue injuries but less effective with skeletal problems. I use both, as and when required.
Perfect case for a GP then a possible physio referral. If you want a chiropractor then get a homeotherapist to refer you as they're as much use as each other.

+1. Don't get me started.

I have always had good results from my chiropractor, equally from the physio I use. Ho hum....
I use an osteopath - kind of the 650b of the back injury world.
Yes go, wife ignored similar pain and ended up immobilised for weeks.
We don't want that on our conscience!
Chiropracter bad, Cannabis oil good seems to be the current hive mindset....
....but then that is a bunch of nerdgeek opinions on stuff they know next to nothing about but have done "research" using the google button

Choose your healer carefully kids.
Thanks all, I've got an appointment on Friday morning to see the Dr (unfortunately it's the same Dr who told me that hooping cough I had a few years ago was just a cough so I'm prepared to be a bit pushy to get a referral!)
