My first thought is that it was channeling William Hartnell, though the shirt collar is all wrong.

See, I thought that, and wondered if it was just me. Not that I particularly wanted to see Colin Baker again, but it does seem a little underwhelming. I suppose it's appropriate for an older actor, it's not a million miles away from Hartnell / Troughton / Pertwee.

Collar looks wrong and a man his age shouldn't wear that cut of trousers.

Although that would be for a Human obviously, rather than a Timelord.

All bets are off for aliens surely, wear what you like.

It's a bit dull for Hartnell:

Patterned, pop-style waistcoat, spongebag trews, monocle & bow tie. Fancy-schmancy!

It's not like he has to wear cherry red DMs and carry a cane, but a bit of scarlet lining? Is that it?

On the plus side, the taper of his trews means that he's no need of cycle clips, should Mr Moffat manage a bike-based plot device...

Well quite. Matt Smith was more overt about it than others have been, but The Doctor was always trying to look cool without any real understanding of how to do it. Bow tie and a fez, anyone?

(Cough) pleats in trews?!?

Naaaa, that's the reason it looks all wrong.

Turns out Uncle Rory didn't die strapped to his motor bike - he was the Doctor all the time! Can't take Peter Capaldi seriously in any other role.

Pretty cool and understated, anyone remember Ecclestone's leather jacket? Generally, the Doctor's dress has to more or less not attract too much attention. Leave aside Pertwee, he was trapped on Earth. There's a touch of Hartnell going on there, and Capaldi has that barely controlled anger thing going on.
I much prefer this outfit to the comedy clown outfits that middle-era Doctors wore.

That blind date didn't go well then
