I just watched a duck spend about 5 minutes desperately pecking at some river weed with no noticeable effect.

I assume it was trying to eat it but the flat beak was useless.

How did the duck evolve with the wrong beak?

Ducks evolved by working for British Gas.

They can stick their bills up their arse.

Perhaps eating something on the weed (larvae, insects?)

They have serrations on the edges of their bills, so can easily cut bits of plants but not by pecking at it. Maybe it knew you were watching and are now the laughing stock down the pond.
