Was going to post the America thing, but I see Supernova and Cougar have beaten me to it.

Several people claiming the American thing, which is exactly what I thought too

But the "egg info" page I linked is "the official voice of the British egg industry" and they say:

Store eggs at a constant temperature below 20°C – this maintains freshness and quality. The fridge is the best place to keep them in domestic kitchens

Who keeps chocolate long enough to warrant refrigeration? You freaks.

We just like a nice 'snap' eating it, posh chocolate has a snap apparently, I couldn't give a fig but I like a slightly crunchy Chocolate Orange now and then.

No we use one of these for stock rotation.

Our house is old and the kitchen is not above 20 degrees

I bought a fridge from Craig David.

It's not much use, it only chills on Sunday.

When was the last time someone had an egg go off? I keep them out of the fridge and never look at use by dates and can’t ever remember having a dodgy one. I

I eat them weeks (if not months) after their use by date.

My mother would always tell me, "If they smell, they're off. There never used to be dates on eggs".

Keep mine in the fridge.

This is what I understand - they can get too warm in a home (even in winter, many homes are centrally heated >20°C). The only reason they are not refrigerated in supermarkets is that they are normally around 16°C to 18°C.

I'm stealing that, thank you.

Correct. That treatment is called “washing” and it’s (theoretically) to reduce the risk of salmonella, but it compromises the shells so they have to be refrigerated. We don’t do this in the UK because we inoculate our hens instead. In the US it’s illegal to sell unwashed eggs, in the UK it’s illegal to sell washed ones as it increases risk of contamination from the outside i

but I don't believe it does any harm and it's a convenient place to keep them....so I do. I'd have *thought* it extends their life as well (but based on eggs I've used at my mothers you can go way way beyond the use by date even on eggs not kept in the fridge)

Why else would you get an egg tray with a fridge?

why else would supermarkets store them on the shelves?

this my default for any food, store it how its stored in the shop. except dark choc of course, has to be coldycold.....

In fridge:
Ketchup,
Mayonnaise

Not in the fridge:
Eggs
Cucumber
Tomatoes,
bread,

Good quality chocolate with a high cocoa percentage should 'snap' without being put in the fridge.

If you ever melt a Magnum or choc ice, the actual chocolate covering is minging, in fact it's only the fact it's been frozen that it's edible.

"Keeping eggs in the fridge is an American invention because they treat their eggs before sale in such a way that means the shells can be compromised by bacteria, we don’t."

This is the key point!

I just picked up 60 eggs from our local free-range farm and they said they're good for 28 days out of the fridge.

No to eggs in the fridge

And what sick twisted bastard puts chocolate in the fridge!

Chocolate should be room temp and be left to melt in the mouth so you can enjoy the texture and flavour!

Plenty folk.

My house is 20.5 atm, and the heating hasn't been on all day, and it's not even summer yet.

Eggs still not in fridge mind! Mayo from the fridge is an abomination too.

Hide chocolate in the freezer. They won't find it there.

Yep, don't buy them often, but they last months in the fridge.

If in doubt, put them in a bowl of water, if they float dont use them.

You know that enjoyable bit you are describing beautifully - it lasts longer if the choclolate is colder.

They "last" OK out of the fridge but don't poach as well if they're not fresh.

Yes.

Because, official advice, egg holder in fridge, less worktop space taken up and means I don't need a poncey egg rack thing.

Never had an issue with them in the fridge and lasts plenty long enough (only off egg I've had was bad from the shop).

Mayo in fridge too though I've left it out before and been good for days. Just tends to dry out on the surface though if left out.

Ketchup does not belong in the fridge. Never goes off, so many preservatives.
