If you study an Open University degree do you get holidays (Summer, Christmas etc) like normal Universities or is is constant study throughout the year?

Depending on when you start its pretty much like a normal uni.

Academic year October to end of May with 2 weeks off for Christmas and Easter.

Not sure how it works if you start a course in Feb.

I had assignments throughout the year - no recognition of holiday periods.

The modules run for like 6 months at a time or so, and they have built in breaks on the study calendar like at Christmas etc. I see lots of people seem to be able to get what seems like months ahead of the study calendar somehow

I did a Maths degree about 10 years ago, I'm pretty sure it was based around the standard academic year back then. You could take a week off during term as long as you made the time back up and got the assignments in on time.

Iolo, The Mrs is into her 4th year of the OU doing a degree. Her course runs from Sept to April. You get a time scale in which to complete assignments, she has had to do one over xmas which is due in Feb.
So in answer to your question..No. ๐Ÿ™‚

When I did my degree, oooh 10 years ago, the courses ran from Jan or Feb through to exams in October, course work probably finishing in September a month before teh exams.

In terms of the structure of it, as mentioned above, over the course of 7 months there are maybe 5 or 6 assignments that are due in every 4 or 5 weeks. My routine was to do nothing for 2 weeks, read a bit for the third week, then smash the assignement out in a mad panic in the last week or two....then because of that stress I would reward myself with a week off, that would turn into 2, and the cycle would repeat itself.

I enjoyed it, I had christmas and New Year off from studying, my birthday is in December so that was in teh "holidays" too, but in terms of summer holidays I remember having to take my books away with me and do a bit of reading, but I was never away when anything was actually due in. It is workable.

But bear in mind, I work at a 'traditional University' and our students had assignments that were due on return in Jan, with first year students on a week long field course during the winter holidays. Second year they have a week long field course in the Easter holidays and third year you will be completing your dissertation during the holidays. Some students will also go away for up to 2 weeks for field classes in summer between years 2 and 3. OU structure may be a bit different, but working during the holidays happens everywhere.

like normal Universities

Summer was spent working 9-5 to pay for the other 9 months, Christmas was cramming for January exams, Easter was writing dissertations and cramming for May/June exams. I don't think I got more than 1 week away in 4years!

I'm on my 4-th year of OU now. The next course is starting in February.
1. I work full time.
2. My wife works in the evenings.
3. We have 6-years old daughter.
4. I am addicted to riding a bike.

All these four things mean I don't follow the timetable given by OU. All my assignments have been submitted about 3 minutes before the deadline (#livingontheedge). During the course there is no particular "holiday time", but when the course is finished - there is nice few months break (October-February)! ๐Ÿ˜‰
