being or feeling pressured is a weakness in you rather than the idea of buying in rounds.

but you have to keep up with the quickest drinker in the group. You also have to ensure that you buy your share and if you say 'thats it for me' you can feel the pressure that you aren't man enough for the group.

I've always rocked up with a spirits shot or glass of red. The lesser strength individuals tend to parp about it but who is the strongest character me or that person? 🙂

Or you say 'no thanks, I'm okay with this at the moment'.

It really is that easy.

I invoked an alcohol on Friday and Saturdays rule a little while ago.

Theres occasional exceptions if im out for a meal or something and the good lady would say I have just shifted weekly intake to the weekend but I feel better for it, couldnt do foggy days at work anymore and have shifted some lard.

A bottle of red is about my max even on a weekend after that I start trolling helmets and hi viz evangalists.

When it comes to your round and if you're not finished with YOUR drink, then buy everyone else one. You absolutely DO NOT have to keep pace. I usually drink 1 in 2 or even 1 in 3 when I'm oot with the Geordies...

Avoiding buying a drink is a no no, but not buying your share is just how the round works out, no one actually cares. If they'd did, they'd probably be buying their own anyway.

Pressure? Seriously?

It normally goes like this:

"you guys want another drink?"
"aye, please"
"yes please"
"i'm alright"
"yes please"
"no i'm good"
"aye, thanks"

(that's Glasgow btw, before you suggest that's just how things work in Surrey 😉 )

Not much in the way of peer pressure and no one is sitting with a calculator working out whether they've spent more than they drank. if there was, I doubt I'd be having a pint with them anyway.

You're an adult, other adults will respect you more if you are able to make your own decisions. They're more likely to raise an eyebrow if you're sat there steaming after chugging down 4 pints too quickly or are sat with a table full of half finished pints.

Do you drink too much?

No. Actually last Thursday was the first pint after nearly 6 months and it was good. But I do drink Supermalt non-alcoholic stuff twice or three times a week. 90p per bottle from Tesco

However, I do smoke 20 roll up tobacco a day like a chimney if that helps ... 😀

FMe these "how much do you drink" threads really do bring out the prigs and the impossibly virtuous of this parish. Drinking less than the government recommended max does not make you a good person.

Couldn't imagine a life without ale.

That's a bit sad.

why is it a bit sad.....because it is something you don't do?

Bit of a difference between saying "I like a drink", and "I couldn't live without a drink", to the extent the latter is probably verging on substance abuse, which I think is a bit sad. Not "OMG UR sooo SAD" in a teenage down with the kids way, but slightly depressing.

I don't think there's anything in my life that I'd say "I couldn't live without", least of all one that has such immense destructive capabilities.

Anywho, it's a bloody long way down off this horse, so I'll bow out and try to get down.

I drink more than any of you by the sounds of it, and definitely too much. Sunday I think there were five or six of us who got through three bottles of vodka. Frequently drink 6-8 pints, many days in a row.

If you haven't tried anything with a complex flavour profile, perhaps.

Seeing as I'm in a good mood I'll helpfully point out that your post makes you sound like a monumental bellend. I'm sure that's not the case, hence this post.
HTH.

I'm kinda with Hora on this one, there's only a select few people I will go rounds with, from my experience going rounds with a bunch of people you don't know too well* ends with problems and even if they don't I reckon they contribute to drinking more (even if only slightly) than you would without.

*Admittedly these usually tend to be big work/stag/other dos rather than a few wee snifters after a night ride.

I've kinda lost the ability to drink, in that for every year past 40 y/o I've 'lost' a pint.

Consequently now a couple is enough, and very happy with it compared to how I use to drink - was on expenses working away for many, many years and also plenty of cash so never worried about the money.

Although went out last Friday to a do and for about the first time in years didn't drive, consequently I'd had 3 pints before we left the house at 6pm and last drink was at 2am - I felt well 5h1t the next day.

A normal week though would be 4/5 beers at home and 1-2 in the pub after mid-week evening/night ride - which is tonight 🙂

I had around 45 units on Saturday, maybe 15 - 20 Sunday, 4 Monday and 4 yesterday but that's extremely excessive for me (these days) and I won't drink again now for a couple of weeks..

I guess I'm usually around 20 units per week, often less rarely more

I think Winston Churchills quip says it all

I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me

Use it to alleviate the pressures of life. Let it be a benefit to living and letting off steam.

When it takes more from you and you are a passenger. Quit.

Went through Jan/Feb dry. March/April was a bottle of wine at the weekend. Currently on a bottle or two of beer whilst watching the footie but not every night (for either).

I don't drink a lot mid-week, maybe a social pint or two in the evening. But if I'm going out for a big night out, it tends to be 8-9 pints (or the equivalent in shots mixed in). I am the ugly face of binge drinking Britain 😀

Fun as it is, it does royally shag any chance of a good weekend's riding though - so I try to make a big night out a rarity, and it feels like more of an "occasion" rather than a weekly scheduled thing.

Unfortunately, a friend told me about the "bicentennial" - 100 beers* and 100 miles run in a week. This is clearly an awesome idea, I'm aiming to get it done later this year... 😈
http://doublecenturyandabeltbuckle.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/in-summary-running-and-drinking.html

* US beers, so only ~65 pints

Winston always struck me as the type of man who would put himself on the ground, seek adventure and feel down and beaten up over news that a difficult decision resulted in alot of French sailors deaths, hora.

FTFY 🙂

Stop fighting guys, I'll get the Jagermeisters in 😀

I don't, if I've had 10 pints since New Years day I'd be very surprised. I use to drink a fair bit up to the age of 21, proper binge drinking, but it's got less and less ever since.

Sometimes (according to the recommended weekly units), I probably do.

But it doesn't seem like enough sometimes.............

I almost made it to four days with no alcohol a couple of weeks ago.
Only had one pint since Sunday, but it's the start of le weekend tomorrow so I'll probably struggle to avoid it.
It doesn't help that I live right in a town centre; the first thing I see out of my window in the morning is a pub.

Possibly. Normal week for me is nothing Monday to Thursday, a shared bottle of wine with the wife on Friday, 4 or 5 pints with friends Saturday and 1 or 2 bottles of beer Sunday.

I've never felt that is too much, it's certainly a whole lot less than I used to drink.

He said a life without ale, not a life without alcohol. There's a difference.

I couldn't imagine a life without good wine, beer or whisky. In the same way I couldn't imagine a life without aged ribeye, shellfish and hummus

I'm sure i'd survive without any of the above. But that's all it would be. Surviving.

I like this post a lot, why not enjoy a nice pint, a nice bottle of wine, some nice food etc... why be here if you cannot enjoy yourself? That is why we ride our bikes is it not?

What I don't get is that it's fundamentally accepted that some nights you can go out l, drink 15 pints, have a kebab, throw up and want to start a fight because you're drunk.
People who have the occasional sip (read big bloody glass) of whiskey at home become alcoholic while their wives do sudoku.
Mental health patients use alcohol to self medicate - this is really not a good idea.
Alcohol in moderation is fine but who controls the consumption. You. Are you always the best qualified? Sometimes not.
My friends father died of alcoholism.
A dear friend who is a solicitor lost her job when they found vodka at work. They took her kids away and has 12 months to prove she's sober or the kids are gone.
Another I know is a ward sister with a major alcohol problem. Its an illness just like heroine addition. Worse because you can go to spar or any pub to get your fix.

Almost certainly, but I'm spoiled by having an excellent local, with excellent beer that's insanely cheap for North East London.

Sampling pints of craft beer is just a taste thing right 😀

Off out with the lads riding tonight so will probably have 4 pints after that in the pub. I'll have a few on Friday or Saturday night. 1 or 2 homebrews a night the rest of the week but for one night when I give the liver a break.
So yes I probably drink too much. It's been such a stressful and sad year for us I think I've needed it.
