I am about to lay some engineered wood flooring and I'm trying to decide what the best underlay would be for my circumstances.
The flooring is some of the real-wood-topped click-together stuff, and it will be floating on top of floorboards. The floorboard are pretty flat (for a victorian house) but not perfectly flat.
What I am keen to avoid is that spongy flexing that you get with laminate floors when you walk on them. I'd like the flooring to feel really solid underfoot. So I don't want to use that cheap foam underlay that comes on rolls.
I've seen some fibreboard underlay that looks more substantial, but I'm wondering if i can use something even harder than this, perhaps simply traditional hardboard...?
Any advice?
Thanks in advance, P
I've used that green stuff under a couple of floors and not had any problems. does seem a bit more substantial than the roll stuff. Problem is always that you always need 1 more sheet than you get in a pack to finish a room!
Thanks for the reply.
Anyone else got experience of this stuff or any alternatives?
we used sheets of 3mm ply and secret nailed through the new floor and that to the wooden floor in our flat. feels solid. was using 18mm solid oak flooring though not engineered click together stuff

I've just put Quickstep in the hall and kitchen and soon to be in dining/ living room too. I've put Selitac from B&Q under it. Not cheap, but the house is about a degree to degree and a half warmer now.
Ps its about 5mm thick.
ive always used space blanket insulation as underlay on my wooden floors - but i have concrete floating floors.
@willyboy - that stuff looks very interesting. How do you find it is for the "sponginess" factor? Is it nice and firm or do the boards flex noticeably when you walk on them?
try here lots to choose from.

I wouldn't say that it flexes. It was really easy to lay and you can cut/ join it very easily. I taped most joints. It does dent a bit if you kneel on it before the boards are layed.
